Seth Posted February 5, 2024 Posted February 5, 2024 I don't think it's illegal to catch a limit every day and give it away. Whoever takes the fish is the one who "possesses" the fish. It is illegal to catch and keep more than the daily limit for that body of water per day though. You could catch 15 on one lake and then go to another with a limit of 15 and catch another 15 there and you're still legal since the daily limit for the state is 30. The possession limit for the state is 60 crappie so four days worth from a body of water with a 15 fish limit or two limits from a river or anywhere that follows the statewide daily limit. As a guide, I don't think there would any "legal" issues by catching and keeping your limit each day and sending it home with your clients ONCE per day. If you do it twice in one day then you're exceeding your daily limit. Proving it would be difficult though unless somebody is watching you like a hawk all day long. Lvn2Fish 1

tjm Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 I don't suppose the states are at all concerned about the bass fisheries in that pond if they are still allowing culling and transporting of fish by the tourney anglers. If there is any concern about the numbers and size of fish, stopping culling and relocation of bass should be a priority. As it is the minimum size could be 6" and not have any real effect. The states could also regulate or ban the use of electronics instead of encouraging it. I see no concern by either the states or the anglers. MObassin95 1

Anybody that is worth a flip at finding and catching crappie can bust out a limit pretty quick. That or they just the clients catch the guides limit too and then take home some extra fillets. I doubt anybody is getting in trouble over crappie as long as the boat limit ain't exceeded and they are seperated in some way to know whose fish is whose.

Bill Babler Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 It’s a grey area for sure. I NEVER got involved in the catch clean and keep deal in 30 years of the guide business. Never gave a client a single fish I caught or kept a single fish I caught showing a client how. Really never let clients party fish. If you wanted to keep trout or pan fish excluding bass, you had to catch your own. Once you had your limit or the limit I chose to impose.( 2) walleye, you were on catch and release. You don’t have to go into grey areas as 30 years in the business shows and more trips than I could take. Have no idea what Capt. Rick is doing and we all have to let our conscious be our guide. I can’t like this post enough !! Exactly the way a steward of the lake should be ! Thanks for caring Bill . IMO every single guide on the lake should be held to the highest standard when it comes to conservation and the law.
