  1. OK, poor comparison on my part. My point was simply that everyone should be able to enjoy the sport how and when they want. To expand a bit... 30 years ago my then-wife talked me into taking over a local trout farm against my "better judgement". Pay fishing was the lowest of the low for me at that time,, and I wanted nothing to do with it. After doing it for ~10 years though, I did a complete 180. Yeah, most of my customers were "urbanites" that didn't know a trout from a pout, but the kids didn't care. They learned that cane pole/fixed line/bobber/hook routine in about 30 seconds, and were squealing with delight shortly after when they pulled in their first fish. I had the pleasure of helping several thousand of those city kids learn to appreciate the simple fun of fishing. Best experience of my life. I suspect the urban trout programs provide much the same experience.
  2. Is it any more pathetic than a FF snob decked out in the best Orvis/LL Bean gear, with his artisanal wooden rod and basket, and getting his elevated nostrils sunburnt? Not IMO, either way it's about people enjoying the act of fishing, regardless of the style, time, or place.

  4. The cost of having fun can include more than money. I had more fun in my first 63 years than any 3 men deserve... but I expect the bill will come due soon. No regrets.

    What's Cooking?

    My clan requested fish fry again this year, so I obliged. I liked the sound of @rps horseradish cole slaw and gave it a whirl. Big hit, thanks! Goes great with fried catfish. I had some of the biggest and best pecans I've ever had too, crumbled some into the slaw on my plate only and liked it even better!
  6. Traditions surface on the holidays. Listening to Arlo do Alice's Restaurant has been one of my Thanksgiving habits for 45 years now. Here's the 50th anniversary version from 2016; https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=qXCP3-v4ts8&feature=share That link may be subscription only, so here's the original if you're so inclined; https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=0o4x_-sHcdo&feature=share
  7. I was fixing a snack the other night with Andy Griffith on the tele, you may remember the one where the cute county nurse enticed Andy to convince ol' Rafe Hollister into getting his tetanus vaccine... Pretty funny, because every angle of that show is paralleled today. Anyway , turns out ol' Rafe had a pretty good set of pipes on him;

  9. I think that would fall under "putting your object in someone else's hole without consent".
  10. Most Missouri springs emerge at their lowest point, where the surface intersects the confining layer. Some have pits, pools, shafts, etc along their path, but unless it's an artesian spring (rare), the water all comes from a higher elevation, nearby recharge area.
  11. Some deep geo wells have hit 100C just shy of 4km deep. It’s not that simple though. Assuming a mostly vertical water column of 4km (13,123 feet of head) like one might imagine RR to be, water at the bottom would be under 5600+ psi. Water boils at 100C only at sea level atmospheric pressure, it’s well over 700F at 5K+ pressure. So yeah, it could be really, really deep, and you’d still not see any bubbles at the surface. 😉 The most likely depth limit is the boundary to the next geologic layer down, which is most likely a confining layer, or there wouldn’t be a spring there.
  12. I've heard the Ronco Cork Soaker is pretty sweet...😉

  17. Here's the deal... just when you think the walleye pre-spawn is about to peak, the whites show up and ruin it.
  18. I'd have never thought you could buy 'gator gar online, so I had to look. Yep. Average prices seem to run ~ $30 for 2-3", $80 for 6-7", & $200 for 9-10". There's an idea for supplemental retirement income...
  19. Like everyone else, my birthday is just one day a year, but I celebrate it at least once a week. Which reminds me of a story... Most every Saturday I go to my favorite Mexican restaurant and have what they call a "monster" margarita with my meal. The locals, mostly being the pious, self-righteous type, unintentionally entertain me with whispered comments about the size of my drink. If they work up the nerve to address me directly, I just say, "I'm celebrating my birthday", at which they are instantly relieved, profusely offer me Happy Birthdays, and everything's cool. Just shows you can celebrate your birthday any dam day you please.
  20. Happy Birthday Jeff!

  22. Didn't realize it at the time, but it twisted me up pretty good for about a month. I worked thru it on a double all-nighter on Table Rock.
  23. No doubt. Makes you wonder if the green bass fans that whine about stripers ever actually caught one...
