Jerry Rapp Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Because as I approach a dock I head in at an angle then hit reverse to straighten the boat parallel to the dock. Hitting reverse when someone is standing on the bow stresses me out. Just wait until I bring the boat to a stop....I don't need you to "help me" dock the dang boat! 10/4. I always just idle in parallel, hit a little reverse, grab hold of a cleat and my partner, who is in the front or back deck jumps out. But I just fish with a few different guys, and it is our routine. One thing that peeves me off is not being ready to move while fishing a T. Had a co-worker who would fill in sometimes. Not really a newbie to bass fishing, but still really didn't "know" how to work a bait properly. Guess what sometimes his off the wall stuff worked. But the first couple of T's he fished with me, I would say "we're moving". I would raise the TM, put on PFD, be in seat waiting to go, and he would still be arranging his rods, much less putting on his PFD. I learned to say "we're leaving" 5 minutes early.
Mitch f Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Something I require anymore when running a stream, is to have my fishing partner looking forward at all times. Its easy to get lulled into gawking at an eagle soaring, and not watching where you are going. I have nightmares of running upstream into a broken off log facing downstrean and taking somebodys head off. Skinny rivers require a responsible driver for sure. fishinwrench Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 But if I'm standing on the front there is no reason to dock it. Just pull straight up, I'll step off and you can back up and wait for me to get the truck. Oh whatever, you can't even walk down a flight of stairs without busting your butt. If you'll just stay put I'll bring us right in and come to a stop where you can step on the (sometimes slippery) dock safely without any acrobatics. What's the rush? I don't even have a seat in the front of my boat so if you loose your balance you're swimming....possibly with a busted head.
fishinwrench Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Another good one, Jerry. Here I set, engine idling and ready to go.....What's my partner doing? Champ188 and dtrs5kprs 2
Flysmallie Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Oh whatever, you can't even walk down a flight of stairs without busting your butt. Oh sure, being that up again. Â Â
dtrs5kprs Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 Let's give fresh new boaters a break for a minute and talk about things us "seasoned veterans" do that needs improvement. I'll open with this one.... When you and a partner return to the dock does your partner jump up and walk to the bow as you are idling in ? Drives me crazy when guys do that. Keep your @ss in the seat until I give you the nod. Preach it. Just asking to get wet, hurt, or in my way causing me to tear something up. Keep still and try not to be helpful. Champ188 1

Pepe Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I keep my boat in a slip and (usually) have my speed and direction right so the boat stops where I want it to on top of the submerged lift. My wife like to "help" me though and often grabs some portion of the dock just a few seconds before the boat is in proper position. As domestic tranquility is best preserved by thanking her I now have no idea how to dock a boat Champ188 1
MOPanfisher Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I preserve my marriage when taking my wife with me by having her stand near the courtesy dock and guard the boat while I back it in, launch it, tie it and park the truck. So far no one has stolen the boat while she was guarding it, she is that good.
Champ188 Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Donna is better at backing the trailer and handling the boat than a lot of men. Our routine is I back her in when we launch and then she goes and gets the trailer in the afternoon. You'd have to ask her why we do it that way. And by the time I climb down out of the boat when we'rle loading up, she has half or more of the latching down done. Yeah, I think I'll keep her. Codywskeeter1521 1
