ollie Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 While I saw the movie and enjoyed it, my wife made the observation that there was no joy whatsoever in the movie! She is right about that. Only thing I didn't like about it was how again Hollywood had to embellish on it for a story. If you have read anything about Hugh Glass then you would know the story line didn't quite follow true life. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
JestersHK Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Book was better as is usually the case. From a pure cinematography perspective I haven't seen better in a long time. Filmed the whole movie in natural light... Hollywood added their take on a few things where it strayed from the book (also based loosely on Hugh Glass' life) which I thought was unnecessary... Overall worth seeing in the theater for me. It is graphic, and sometimes brutal, which I enjoyed a realistic depiction, but the wife squirmed a bit at a few scenes. Tom Hardy stole the show as Fitzgerald imo.
Jerry Rapp Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I got coerced into going to see it Monday. It was o.k. up to the point of Leo floating down the river, what appeared to be several miles, hanging onto a log with ice flows all around. Hypothermia would have got him very, very quickly. But he managed to drag himself out and still have the strength to start a fire. Just curious, was this how the book described this? Or was the float trip a Hollywood add on?
jolicious Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 The previews for this movie look so awesome. But, the previews also lead me to believe that there will be a horse dying scene. I'm a complete wuss about that stuff. For CHRISTmas this year my wife bought me a hoodie that reads "I don't care who dies in a movie as long as the dog lives". Unfortunately for my movie going experience, it's true. Thanks to everyone for discussing the movie here - I appreciate the info
JestersHK Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Not allot of love for the horses jolicious so consider yourself warned. As for the river scene pretty sure that was hollywood add on. If it was in the book it was nowhere near that drawn out. Need to go back and re-read for sure. I definitely recommend the book, Michael Punke did a great job with it. Its a pretty quick read as well. jolicious 1
Mark Posted January 20, 2016 Author Posted January 20, 2016 Sure it wasn't exact depiction of the story, not all true, but won't ruin it for others. Most "based on actual events" movies take liberties. While on the dark side, I thought the depiction of how life must have been for early mountain men and explorers in the west was realistic and portrayed well. I wouldn't have made it long as a mountain man. Agree Tom Hardy character was awesome. Still think it is a great movie and holds your interest. BTW Jim Bridger ended up in Missouri and was buried in Kansas City area. podum 1

MOPanfisher Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I am watching Big Jake right now and it is just about to the part where "dog" gets killed. So while I have no particular love for horses I can understand the sentiment.
