BilletHead Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Two that smashed the fry on top. No other hits. Fun morning with Mrs. BilletHead. She just watched not even stringing up her fly rod. The bass weighed four pounds and the hybrid close to six pounds. Same spot last week missed six on top and hooked two just to have them unbutton themselves before landing them. Got a question for you all. What makes your fishing trip? Quantity, quality or otherwise? I have discussed this with one of my fishing buddies. To get to these fish is a long ride. Would it be worth doing this for two fish? Up this morning at 3:30, then a 45 minute ride to the launch, another 35 minutes to the spot. Got to be there early. Back home at 10:30 AM. To me yes well worth the trip. Bummed a bit none landed last week but it is the process of catching or not catching I love and what you see running in the early morning going to the spot. Had an eagle fly right above out heads and land in a tree thirty feet away. Gave us the stink eye like what are you doing fishing in my hole? First of all, Dang nice fish Marty. I'm probably the worst numbers guy on OA, but A few quality fish can replace a big number of fish being caught . The quality of the experience can replace catching big numbers as well. I love seeing new places and catching "new" species. I just flat of love to fish. Johnsfolly Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Great fish photos! Also a great question! My only answer is that it depends. As you know I have to run a fair distance from home to fish some of my favorite waters. In most cases they could be numbers waters or possible big fish waters. I will go to one or two spots on the Current where I am likely to catch a 18+" brown and go home with that memory if I do hook up and land one. I also love to fish places like Little Dixie lake just to catch 30 to 40 7" crappie just because you can catch that many in an hour right at dark during the spawn. Also with my microfishing for new species I am satisfied after researching a likely stream to actually catch that species even if I had to drive 400+ miles round trip. As Ham said we all love to fish. There is nothing better than fooling a fish and feeling that tug on the line. Of course then there are the pictures. fishinwrench Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Nice! Yep, worth it. Numbers of smaller fish (if not too much smaller) certainly makes the day seem like less of a chore but catching better average fish is what it's all about. I keep track of my weight of keeper sized fish, and consider a 12-15lb. limit a pretty good day. BilletHead, Daryk Campbell Sr and Johnsfolly 3
Johnsfolly Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Wrench What's the limit on shiners? I may have to catch 200 to 300 to reach a 12 lb limit. In a lot of rough fish tournaments in Britain they keep all of the fish that they catch in a giant net and weigh the entire days catch. They often have hundreds of fish over a single day.
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I believe it is the whole trip wrapped up that counts. Quality and quantity are the bonus. Your mention of the eagle is what I mean. If you didn't catch any, you still got to see something that tickles. Did you get to learn something that made you wonder if you have been "doing it all wrong before"? I usually do. They say it's the journey and not the destination. I agree with them. Greasy B Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 For sure worth it. Most folks on this forum fish for all the right reasons. For me rivers are the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth, fish or no fish that's the clincher. Mitch f Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I'm a quality fish guy, one big one and I'm good for the day. And it looks like you had a fantastic day!! BilletHead 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Flysmallie Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 My answer will always be otherwise. Used to get off work on Friday afternoon and drive 7 or 8 hours to Lake Fork with a buddy. Fish all day Saturday and half the day on Sunday and then drive home. Made that trip a bunch and some times your two fish would have been the best trip we had. To me it's more than just catching a fish. Yes I love to catch fish more than anything. And Yes I love catching the big ones. But more than anything I just love going fishing with friends. That enjoyment begins when I pull out of the driveway. I don't have to have a line in the water to be having a good time. It's about time to retire that particular pair of shorts.
