fishinwrench Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 If they do that consistent up/down craziness this Spring we may have a jacked up spawn bite. Not sure if they'll try to keep the lake low through the Spring, but if they do it will kinda suck. So much for a good run of Whites. ? http://m.lakeexpo.com/news/lake_news/huge-bagnell-dam-project-to-add-million-pounds-of-concrete/article_6b125cb6-d750-11e6-8742-4b20533c5c5d.html?mode=jqm

MOPanfisher Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 The article doesn't mention any lowering of the lake, or holding it lower, but that certain doesn't mean they wont. It did say that it would have no effect on generation capability?

DADAKOTA Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 If the work is on the downstream side of the dam, why is there an impact on water level?

There may not be, and I certainly hope there isn't. Over the last several years though, they seem to have this habit of not allowing a gradual rise from low Winter pool. During the spawning season they invariably begin a up/down/up/down thing that keeps the level fluctuating 1.5 - 2' with a base level below 658.0 As far as I can tell it hasn't had a noticeable negative effect on the bass/crappie/bluegill spawn, and it certainly doesn't effect the catfish spawn since they spawn later during summer pool levels, but it does negatively effect the White bass spawn. What they either don't know, or don't care about, is that during normal pool levels the incoming water from creeks forms a sediment level creating large flats of shallow water, and when the level is then dropped and held several feet lower then there is a dam (of sorts) that prevents fish movement up into the creeks. When the lake level is below 657.8 you won't find a single White bass migrating into the creeks to spawn. At 658.0 a few will start making the jump, and the eagles and ospreys will camp out over the flats to pick a few off when they try. At 658.5 and above they'll run full force. 2 years ago they didn't allow the lake above 657.5 until late May and we lost a complete year class of Whites (I think). For a fish species that only lives 4-5 years max, losing a complete year class is bad news. If we ever lost two year classes back to back I think you'd definitely notice way fewer Whites. I love Whites, so to me that matters. shaker 1

fishinwrench Posted January 21, 2017 Author Posted January 21, 2017 Heck yeah! Somebody has to stick up for those guys. They are the blue collar workers of the lake. If you think those lazy entitled green basturds will keep the shad population in check, you're crazy. All they wanna do is sit in the shade and wait for handouts. ? vernon, snagged in outlet 3, peoriaone and 1 other 4
Old plug Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 What's bothering me is they are not stating anything about what might happen to water levels. I noted they said most of the construction would be during the week when so as to not interfere with lake activities. Make me suspicious. of how that statement reflects on any statement about water levels. Woulld seem they should have given some kind of assurance statment aboit that.
