Then one of the husbands comes over later holding a glass of wine and says "I've always wanted to fly fish"...happens every time. Mitch F Try to explain the thought process behind microfishing. I get a lot of you catch what.....?!? I personally would not qualify as a fly fisherman for this poll since I have not used my fly rod more than twice a year. I do have multiple rods and reels, just have not gone out that often using the fly rod. Mitch f 1
Gavin Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I fly fish when I want too these days. Fly fished exclusively for over 20 years, and don't suck at it. Have mixed it up for the last 12 years and have more fun. It's the easiest way to catch a fish if you can see it, but sucks if prospecting. Way slow.
joeD Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Why do we have to justify, or explain, how we prefer to fish ( legally of course)? Isn't the fact that we love to fish enough?
ozark trout fisher Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 My primary takeaway is I am apparently a darn cheapskate in comparison to you all. If I spend $500 a year on fly fishing tackle it means I broke two or three rods that year. And I fly fish a lot. I'm a woodland researcher, not a doctor or lawyer or some other respectable profession. Not sure about you but I ain't swimming in money. I primarily still use the same flies my brother and I bought in a failed "buy whole-sale to sell to other people for a little bit more" operation from three or so years ago. I will run out of them eventually and have to buy some more, but that won't be for a hot second. Now, if you include the money I spend getting to the places I fly-fish, okay. We're certainly way over that number at that point. But mercifully that's something I try not to track. Johnsfolly 1
Greasy B Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 I don't understand the questions or why they matter. Whether I have one type of rod or another in my hand is a personal preference that could change from one day to the next or even hourly. It has nothing to do with how much money I spend or how much time is spent one way or the other and there certainly is no hoity toity element to any of it. I don't track it or want to know but I'm sure it's way over $500. snagged in outlet 3 1
fishinwrench Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Hell I spent 450.00+ on fly fishing related stuff last WEEK. I don't even wanna know how much I spent in the last year. Flyfishing cost me another 150.00 today because I crossed the river and forgot that my Moto X was in my pocket. If not for insurance it would have been 700.00 Greasy B 1

I spend most of my time living and working these days in "remote" (by the definitions of the midwest) areas and stop to fish when I get the chance. That's either not often enough (to me) or far too often (if my boss knew the totality my work habits) but either way it's hard even in the moment to really know if that gas money went towards going to work or going to a smallmouth stream. The answer could be yes either way.
joeD Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Oh. Fly fishing. Yes. That explains a lot. My mistake. Carry on. ozark trout fisher 1
