I'm a dinosaur who does not favor competition in all things.  And no, WE didn't do it.  I've never ever fished in a tournament of any kind and I never will.  You and your kind did it.

Make up your mind.   First it was B.A.S.S., and now it's Me and my kind.

Just go ahead and say it..... Everyone but YOU and your kind did it.

Well thank you for not feeding the alligators.   God only knows how fat they would be now if YOU had done it too.

Well to be fair if nobody kept their motors running them glitter sleds would be in yards growing flowers by now. Competition doesn't bother me, that's the way of life, put two kids out in a yard and soon there will be a race, wrestling match something that allows them to compete.  Without a winner or loser there is no competition, only a performance. I like many things and one of them I used to compete in, didnt like the idea of making a job out of something I used to enjoy.  Now the only competition I take part in is me against the fish,  and too often still get beat.  If at then end of the day I look back and say yeah I had fun, then I still win.  YYMV.

I love the competition.   You can bet that if we're fishing together I am doing my best to stay a few up on you.  No denying that.  :)

I dislike the fact that so many fish are being moved around nowadays though.  That bugs me to no end.   Turn them loose right where you caught them and I don't care if you're in a tournament or not, I'll back you up 100% and even help you if I can.

I guess I am different, I always wanted the person in the boat with me to do well...some people fish tourneys because of the competing, and a chance to win $, with that comes cheating.....happens at all levels, even company Crappie tourneys when the top prize is just a 50 buck wally world card...a lot of people are in-love with chasing fame and fortune, not the love of fishing..that was just what they fell into..could have been anything darts-bowling-who has the best xmas lights.....

I only play that way when it's one of my kids.  If it's a same caliber fishing buddy he'd better be on his game. B)

I'm going to ask one of the guys that runs a big tournament circuit and see what his thoughts on that are. I do know they like the big crowds at the weigh ins and the big hero poses with the fish. And I'm pretty sure that's what the sponsors like too and that's probably where the problem begins.

There are very few "spectators" per se at these weigh-ins unless you're talking about a BASS Elite Series or BASS Invitational event. Other than a handful of family members, the "crowds" you see at the weigh-ins are the anglers themselves hanging around to see if they made a check. I speak from a lot of years of fishing Central Pro-Am and other regional-level events.

I always hate to hear someone say that we need to "grow the sport".  There's enough of us out there, it doesn't get better if even more people take up bass fishing.  Nothing wrong with taking kids or a friend out to fish, but the reason should be to take them fishing, not because we need to "grow the sport".

That's a fabrication of the industry to generate sales. "Hey guys, get off your lazy butts and take a kid fishing, but be sure you stop and buy a new Toyota pickup and JohnnyCraft boat rig on the way to the lake. And oh yeah, don't forget to buy all the tackle it will hold. Johnny thanks you for your continued support."

Every time they say, "Grow the sport" all I hear is, "Make more money regardless of outcome."

Doesn't matter if it's fitness, golf, cycling, fishing or you name it all they really want to do now is make as much money as possible and as fast as they can and call it, "maximizing potential for growth".

I'm probably wrong about this but it used to seem (to me anyways) that "growing" something was more about increasing awareness about how beneficial or fun something was and then creating more quality opportunities for folks to participate and share in the enjoyment.

Like building more gyms or bowling alleys or tennis courts or jogging trails - especially in underprivileged areas of towns making opportunities more readily available to more residents.

Now it has zip to do with the quality of the experience - which in fact, in my opinion, has actually gone down in most areas of interest - and is rather all about how can we drain the last single dollar out of all these suckers before we have to move on to the next sham.

The current full court press being applied to the COE to roll back restrictions on docks and shoreline construction is a prime example as are the more than six hundred bass tournament per year on Table Rock.

Neither of which are intended to improve quality or opportunity but rather to maximize profits.

Take a look at modern day Branson.  Another prime example of "growth" literally consuming and destroying the quality of the experience.

I've never been to a Branson show in my life but one needn't be a show groupie to see that that place is going to hell in a hand basket and at a high rate of speed.

It appears to me that it won't be long before instead of being a country music mecca it will have become a blight on the countryside reminiscent of abandoned inner city projects.

And for what?

Just follow the money.

I agree. I fished a lot of those same tournaments in the past. But I'm still guessing that's what his answer will be. It will be a few weeks probably before I see him but I'm still going to ask the questions and plant the seed. I heard the other day they averaged a little over 100 boats per tournament this year so at least they should have some good insight on this.

Its interesting to think why the restrictions were put in place originally....@ TR very early one spring about 20 years... was in a secluded cove chasing slab Crappie... a small isthmus separated the boat from the main lake... heard music and towering above the tree line was a plastic palm tree on the top deck of the biggest houseboat I had ever seen...1st one like that I had ever encountered on the lake..WTFH!....

1st time I went to Branson as a kid with family about 1967........winter when Branson closed up shop was THE time to go trout fishing...the exploding growth did steal the charm of old Branson....the landing turned what was the quaintness  of what the Ozarks was.... to the las Vegas (sans gambling at least for now) that it has become...

all good things come to an end...I have been to a few places that have faded into memories....once a place becomes what people are trying to escape...the downward spiral starts, its why the migration from LOZ to TR and Beaver....
