Been fishing my whole life and have never truly hooked myself until this morning. I carry side cutters in my boat but had to run back to the truck for a mirror. Went ahead and pulled the boat out after extracting the hook from my neck. I figure my luck is about used up for the day.

Ouch!  Thats a good one there man.  Glad you were able to self extract.

Wow! A puncture to the neck a scary place. On the Brightside of this Iam sure we are all thankful it wasn't a spoonbill sized snagging hook!

I have caught 2 biguns that have weighed 130 lbs this summer.  But I hooked myself in the fins.  Never dived in with my mouth to catch a flyer.

how did you manage to to get "hooked up" in the first place?  The only thing I can imagine is that you were hung up and and pulled on the line and got the old slingshot effect when the crankbait came unsnagged?  Please enlighten.

That's pretty much it. Made a cast and the crank stuck to something right at the surface of the water. When I gave it a snap to pop free, it shot right back at me. Happened so fast all I could do was brace for impact.

All in all I was pretty lucky. Once in front of a mirror, it was fairly easy to cut the hook and pull through.

I'm glad I carry side cutters I know can do the job. Also a good reminder on why we should wear shatterproof sunglasses.

I have bought my grandson 3 pairs of sunglasses this year, I make him wear them at all times while fishing.  He keeps taking them home and leaving them there.  Never around when we go fishing.

You need to up the reaction time with your reflexes, toss your arm up to deflect the lure.  That will result in an easier to remove hook from the arm.  Unless it hits a ligament or tendon like a Rapala stick bait did me many years ago.  Had to push it thru tough and then cut off to release.
