Full of hyperbole and cliches. Is he your main outdoor writer over there?

I guess.  I scan the online version daily but they limit content if you don’t pay.  I don’t pay.  That’s the first fishing or hunting article I’ve seen in years there.   Wish I wouldn’t have after I read it.

March 1. We’re only four short weeks away from one of the most exciting, elaborate spectacles that occur in the Ozark outdoors annually.

Ozark fishing at it's best.

Uhh, ok 🙄

I still go down to Maramec for the opener. Not sure why I do that to myself other than tradition. Watching all the madness is more entertaining than the actual fishing. Besides, there ain’t a better tasting stale donut than the ones they serve at the pavillion for opening day! 😂

Here’s a video from last years opener.

I dunno man.  I mean, if you lived less than 30 minutes from there.....ok, it beats washing windows or folding laundry, but I simply cannot understand anybody wanting to drive 2-3+ hours for it.

Especially if you claim the only reason you go is to "watch the madness".   There's way cooler things to watch between where you live and the closest trout park.  Hell I'd rather sit on my tailgate with a cup of hot chocolate and a bag of donuts on a gravel road somewhere....and just watch a field of cows.

I can get most of the Kansas City Star’s content in their app. But the outdoors writing is minimal these days. They canned their really good outdoor writer — Brent Frazee — a year or  two ago.

Newspapers aren't what they used to be when I had my routes back in the 70's....Too many easy online sources for free.

But you don't get the big coupon insert the old ladies used to hound me about😁

I wouldn’t touch the “trout opener” with a 10 foot pole these days....

but when I was I kid I can remember we lived in a small town south of St. Louis.  Dad took me to Maramec Springs for opening day... catching a trout seemed like a big deal to me- I had never caught one before....

We got up at the crack of dawn to get there before daylight.  It was cold....crowded... and miserable.  I made the trip more enjoyable for him by falling in.  I remember him taking me to some bathroom to try to dry off.  Poor dad- ruined is day I’m sure.

But now it is just another one of my good memories of fishing with my Dad.

I've never done the openers, but know a couple guys who did and they said it was mostly a social thing. I get that. I'd go with the right group of guys for the fun of it. Not sure I'd be out there at the whistle though. More likely making a nice breakfast for the knuckleheads that did go out.

Many, many fond memories of family get-togethers at Roaring River in the fall.
