7 or 8 yrs. ago, Phil and I were crappie fishing early one season up Long Creek.  There were huge gar working near our crappie.spot.  We hooked 3 of them  on fly rods with white crappie jigs.  As soon as they would feel the hook set they would jump completely out of the water, like Tarpon.  It was crazy and pretty exciting.  We never came close to boating one, but they were monsters.

I  almost boated a big one using a spoon and spinning tackle, i had a friend with me, but no cut gloves, i might have got it landed with gloves or a glove.

Anyway it looked about as big as they get around here. At least 4.5 ft long, i don't have any idea the weight, it was big enough that the guy that was with me just stood there with his mouth open for what seemed like 10 minutes 😁

So yes i think that a guy could catch something on some old underwear. There is a joke there somewhere.

Oh we were talking about the ned😂

We were catching gar on topwater below Bagnell one day. It was like redneck muskie fishing. They would follow the bait for a while and eventually crush it and then fight like tarpon as you guys mentioned. That was a blast!

I've never been able to get them to hit topwater like that again though.

That's what I do, if it works I would fish with strips of my old underwear.
