If that ever happens again just loosen the lug nuts 2 turns and drive it on the wheel until you feel it let go.

Good friend of mine bought a new Ford truck. Was out in west Kansas pheasant hunting. In the middle of nowhere. Had a flat tire. got the tire tool out and it wouldnt fit the lug nuts! When he called the dealership they told him some of the Fords had expanding lug nuts!! When i called him out on it he got all pissy and demanded that i call the dealership. I didnt but i drive a relatively new Ford F-150 myself so i carry a four way. Especially pulling a boat trailer around.

Crappy 2 piece lug nuts that swell with age and stick in your sockets.

I believe it.  Remember the rubber o-rings Ford put around the lugs?  90's I think.  Couldn't get the wheels off.

This just happened to me.  I was doing brakes on my '06 Dakota.  I was convinced the lug nuts were metric for a brief instant.  I could not get a 7/8's socket on some of them.  On the first one I tried to turn it without the socket fully on and rounded it -- a mistake that would make a 16-year old feel like an idiot.  I applied PB blaster every day for a week, bought a 23-mm socket, got all of them off but removed the damaged nut last -- I hammered that socket all of the way on that nut and it did turn. 

The nuts have a chrome plating, the steel on the nut rusts and expands the chrome plating.  I replaced all of them with after-market steel-only nuts.
