Have to have a license to do stupid stuff in cars and cars have brakes, two pretty major differences. A third major difference is everywhere we drive cars there is a speed limit. Bill, your common sense that that when going around a blind curve speed doesn't matter is faulty regardless of which side of the lake you are on; if you can't see around the corner there may be a stalled boat or a previous wreck there and any speed that doesn't allow you to stop in the distance that you can see is excessive regardless what you drive boat car train and it doesn't matter if the reason you can't see is blind curve, fog, rain or you are blind, if you can't stop in the distance you can clearly see, you are driving recklessly. I guess that when enough boaters get killed that licenses will be required and speed limits or hp limits will be established, until then we can always blame it on the dead guy turning left. It is tragic for the family of the victims but let us not impose any restrictions on the survivors that might affect the commercial use of the lakes. fishinwrench and terryj1024 1 1

Is there a law that people can only swim from designated beaches? I ask because I once saw a speeding boat run right across a pair of swimmers, the swimmers had the presence to dive and stay down as long as they could but I don't think the boater was even aware of them. I was taking lunch on a bluff over looking the lake. and it happened right below me, thought for sure the boat slipped one swimmer but both surfaces and swam to the opposite shore apparently alright. Kinda a blind curve there too. Are sailboats or rowboats allowed on that lake?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 You oughta see what happens on a narrow river with jet boats, rafts, canoes and swimmers.
Bill Babler Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 If you are in the correct outside lane you can see perfectly at that location, so i don't think I'm faulty on this. You can ask the guys that frequent that area, and Quill or RPS can tell you headed up steam if your on the bluff side in your lane speed is not a problem. I was on the state water patrol for 10 years and director of boat operation and water craft handling for the patrol at both the academy and refresher training. I was also the WSI for both the Missouri Water Patrol and the Missouri Hiway Patrol. I'm pretty confident but not cocky in what I'm saying on that "Particular Location." As I said if you have not been to that exact location on Table Rock and seen it personally you cannot possibly have a dog in the hunt. If your swimming from a boat or have a person in the water, you must display a orange flag. On Table Rock it is encouraged as any Corp's lake and is suggested that you only swim in designated marked areas, for your protection. big c and magicwormman 2 http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

A wise person will choose where to use the last three very carefully as the proportion of wake boats and drunk boats is scary high during some times of the year. magicwormman 1

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but that rule of navigation will never fly. Suppose you are at position (A) and want to get to position (B). Is this the path you are expecting people to always take? And would you put your life on it? The navigation rule that is more certain to fly is, stay on heading, but Slow down and friggin' Pay Attention. No sense in going a mile out of your way..... you're gonna get there sooner and burn less fuel by staying the course and just being reasonable with your speed.

There's enough room in that area that 5+ boats wide could run both ways. If common sense were used. I wasn't there and I don't know any of the details. I always approach that area goings both ways just right of middle lake and I ALWAYS look behind me before I get there. I bet I've been passed by faster boats 20+ times on the left. They shave off the point going by there and then by the one straight across from Viney. Good news is I've never seen a boat shave the point going downstream across from Viney. As you've said its blind and there is a lot more boats launched there than you or I think. That being said I would think that the boat going downstream would have to be way right(nearly into the sticks if they weren't just fishing that bluff end) and the boat going upstream be WAY, WAY, WAY left.

Yes it is not some sort of super dangerous spot, certainly you have to pay attention when making that turn, but it is not some kind of scary white knuckle deal. It's on the main White river channel and sees lots of boat traffic during the summer. I haven't heard of a crash there until this one. Hard to know what happened in this case, I am hoping that the survivor recounts what happened so we can all know and maybe learn something from this tragic accident. And as Bill says, if you are going upstream, staying to the right, there is plenty of visibility.

The Google Earth pic has 4 or 5 trucks and trailers parked at it.
