Theren lies the problem.   Diodes are inherently delicate, and when one fails in a lithium battery of that size you can have a nasty meltdown.

Pro-lithium guys are always quick to blame these meltdowns on improper use, improper charging, and blah-blah-blah.....but the cold hard fact that I, as a marine mechanic, know for sure......is that darn few boat owners do things "PROPERLY".   And that fact is highly unlikely to change.

That is a LiPo battery, not a iron phosphate battery.  You can tell because it caught fire...LiFePo4 batteries do not do this.

The issue is there are tons of cheap lithium batteries out there that just aren't high quality.  I had a LiPo battery fail in my boat, and we were just out on the water.

Those specs wont start an ourboart.  The max current is only 200 amps.  It may start the motor once or twice but not reliably.

Talked with a guy who is starting his 250 opti with it, no issues, I will have 30 days to try and send back.  Pulled the trigger on 3.

You know I will be picking your brain about this Les. Need to lighten up the jet as much as I can to take more gear and anchor with me. You know the deal :) .

No diode in the LiFePo4 ?

What is it exactly that ensures that a meltdown can't happen on THAT one ?

Waldo drafts < 2 inches of water without people in it. I kinda like the battery weight up front to help balance the boat out. I do have a lot of boat for that size outboard motor. I'm not going to set speed records, but I have no interest in that. I usually am only trying to beat sunset back to the boat ramp. As I have gotten older, I am maybe a little wiser and try not to put myself in a bind by running a river in near darkness.

Les gave me the heads up to be ready for starting battery to give up the ghost. I'll likely go the AGM route.

the chemistry of he battery prevents it from burning up.

I had the chance to make the jump to lithium on my new (used) boat.   Having bought a NOCO charger that will allow each bank to be open cell or AGM or Lithium.  Looked at it a long time, saw stories of meltdowns and fires from lithium batts--but of course, with improper handling while charging, you can blow the top off a lead acid battery.  So I settled on 3 new AGM batteries.  A matched pair for the 24 volt trolling motor and a big delco/gm AGM car battery for $ 165 that will start anything.  Total cost on the 3 batts was under $500.  HOWEVER they are heavy--total weight for the three was 218 pounds.  Since they went into a pontoon boat--it really did not matter.  If you are going for lithium (at roughly 1/2 the weight)--do not go cheap, things can happen.

I bought a pair of Ampere Time 12v 100ah lithiums last month for $740 shipped to my door. I've used them several times now and my only regret is not doing it sooner. My jet boat hops up on plane noticably better with the reduced weight in the bilge. Having full power to the trolling motor at the end of the day is nice too since I've mainly been fishing current for smallmouth.

I cheaped out and didn't get the heated version since they were $200 more per battery. I'll have to bring them inside to charge during the winter. Since you can buy 20 and 40amp chargers for them, it won't take long to recharge as needed. It's not a burden to remove them either since they are so light in weight.

It would be convenient to have a battery with the bluetooth BMS so you can check how much juice you have left, but I figured I wouldn't come close to running them down that it wouldn't matter anyways.
