It's a flaky white fish..good, but highly overrated. Same with crappie. Crappie is just a flaky white fish. Just fine, but not the best. Sometimes I think people like crappie and walleye because of the lack of flavor. Bluegill and white bass are way better than those two. Also, any saltwater fish will blow a freshwater fish out of the water nine times out of ten. I'm with ya 100% Crappie and walleye taste like whatever you breaded them in. There may be a little protein there, but flavor-wise you might as well just be eating hushpuppies. Trout are good, foil baked in a campfire, mostly because you are starving and that just happens to be what's for dinner. 😅 A couple of hotdogs would be equally satisfying. I kept and cooked wild trout, expecting that they'd be so much better than the white meat stockers I had eaten many times before.......but No, not really. White bass & Stripers, whether fried or baked.....really hit the spot for me. Delicious 😋 nomolites and Ryan Miloshewski 2
MOPanfisher Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Hunger and atmosphere can make about any fish delicious even trout and possibly spoonbill. I like eating the things I like to catch so Walleye crappie and whites or hybrids. And I do live me some flathead especially the belly meat. Goggle Eye are delicious but harder for me to come by anymore. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

I've caught 3. Thats all. I don't often keep fish. I was not able to do much fishing other than very local for a lot of years due to working 2 and 3 jobs and allowing trying to be a family man and father. Things are really turning towards my freedom now as my kids are 23, 16, and 12. Im not complaining, ive enjoyed the ride this far. Just now, I get to do my own things again. Its been a long time. I'll make it a point this year to catch and cook some crappie. One time went to Taney caught some Trout. I was remembering from the 60's told my wife she was in for a treat. We was eating stopped looked at each other and said they tasted the same as the ones out of the river. I take Trout filet them, bread them and fry them. Changes the whole flavor. oneshot

Quillback Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Thought of another one - Northern Pike, they are pretty good, but the bones are aggravating to work around. I've eaten pickerel too, they are good. Kokanee - They are fresh water sockeye, not as good IMO as sockeye from the sea, but not bad. I tweaked my back yesterday, won't be doing much today but watching football and posting on the internet. I might think of some more fish I have eaten. I did think of another one - white perch. They eat well too. Catching one that were big enough to be worth cleaning was the issue with them.
MOPanfisher Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Most fish can be made pretty tasty or just plain nasty depending on who is cooking and how they do it. Plus everyone has their preferences. Some are just dang hard to make "good" others are hard to make "bad" but even crappie bluegill and walleye can be ruined. And while I might like a blackened grilled catfish fillet my wife absolutely hates catfish. Mostly because she had some bad ones as a kid and no amount of properly prepared catfish will change her mind. Although she has eaten a few cut up and fried with crappie and never knew.
