I am going to show off my cocks.

Dad fell and chipped a bone in his hip 3 years ago and had to stay at Sis's house to recover.  He was never able to get out and tend the flock like he used to again.  He had about 20 banty chickens in 2 runs.  He was up in arms on how we were going to feed them.  I just offered to buy them out and butcher them, problem solved.

A local guy came buy one nite and tried to catch them, they were flying out the coop and 5 got away.  They went feral, 4 roosters and a hen.  The hen went to sit and something got her.  2 years ago deer season, one of the roosters disappeared.  This pair has been able to avoid the predators and still keep going.  I keep some hen scratch in the bird feeder and birds kick enough out to give them something during the week in the winter.  I scatter some on ground when I am there.  Summertime, they live off the land.

They have some pretty nasty spurs on them now.

Thanks for info. That is the feed we have been using. We just switched to another local hand mixed feed.

I like to feed whole corn, whole milo, and whole oats.  They can find their own meat. Any brand pellets or crumbles are  made up of trash, garbage, floor sweepings and added flavorings. If you are going to feed the same stuff that egg factories do you might as well by factory eggs, cheaper.

I miss my black silky. I seem to recall that @N9BOW was raising or raised silkies.

We had a few when I was little. Not that any of them are known for being intelligent, but the silkies were especially creative at finding ways to kill themselves. Found one dead under a feed dish one time.

Pretty amazing how fast those little eating, drinking and pooping machines are growing.  Getting wing feathers already that will be the colors the birds have as adults.  They are fun and really very little trouble.

Growing up, I made it a point not to name the food.
