top_dollar Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 Yeah I guess I am the troll thinking that professional fisherman are somehow top notch athletes. 🤣🤣 Look at these pudgy bastards. They couldn't walk down a boat ramp without huffing and puffing.

Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted August 31, 2023 Root Admin Posted August 31, 2023 Just browsed thru the comments. You're really arguing about nothing. There are all kinds of jobs. Some work harder than others. You could say the same thing about baseball players. They're PLAYING baseball - that's a fun sport! But it's not real hard work. Yeah you could tweak a hammy or pull a groin. Lots of similarities actually. Study, practice, prepare equipment... You're arguing about the DEGREE of work. The DESCRIPTION of the word "work". And I guess what started this conversation - the description of what an ATHLETE is. Both are arguably up for discretion. Top Dollar, you obviously feel pretty strong about it. But you have to admit there's room for other's opinions to be reasonable too. BillT and nomolites 2
ollie Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 For me, when I think about pro fisherman I think yeah, that's an easy gravy career to have. But, I also know there has to be a lot of grinding going on. As in schedules, driving a LOT, trying to keep sponsors happy and a family life. Those aren't necessarily physical issues, but more of mental issues. I'm sure they have days where they are being taxed physically, but I would think most of it would be mental. Hard to keep going out and not placing in tournaments knowing money is on the line and that is your source of income. I myself would never have made it had I went into the profession. That is definitely a job where you have to be upbeat all the time even down to the last minute. I couldn't do that I know. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

Fishing if only physically demanding if you are way overweight or out of shape. You're looking at things in a very narrow perspective. Nobody is arguing that professional fishing is physically demanding. Maybe more so than an office job, but nothing like what you mentioned. Distance from your family, sponsor relations, living in hotels, pressure to always perform, the lack of long term success, those mental demands are going to take a toll on you. Ask yourself this, if it was that easy, wouldn't everyone be doing it? -Austin

While I'd love to be making a living doing something I enjoy and am going to do anyway... it always seemed to me the best way to ruin the enjoyment of fishing was to be a pro tournament angler or guide. Even 2023 NBA champ Nikola Jokic mentioned something true in an interview. Following his team's Finals win, he was excited for the end of the season... to go do things he enjoyed... because no matter how fun something is, nobody likes it nearly as much when its their "job". tjm and Nick Adams 2

If you are competing as a pro BASS fisherman then all of your fishing time has to be spent BASS FISHING, or you aren't going to be anywhere near the top of the standings. You can't be jacking around Flyfishing for bluegill and Whites, or tying flys for a Trout fishing trip. That's why I'd never make it. FishnDave 1

I've occasionally wondered if the tournament anglers would be better at their job if they DID fish for other species...bluegills, muskies, catfish, etc...to have a better understanding of the entire food chain and ecosystem that their tournament target species live in? Maybe not, but wouldn't more knowledge help? Folks fishing for other species often catch bass, for example, so wouldn't knowing those other methods help when fishing gets tough on the standard lures and tactics? Seems like it would. bfishn 1
fishinwrench Posted August 31, 2023 Posted August 31, 2023 I can tell ya that Dion & Lawson will put a limit of crappie in a livewell during a tournament......once they've secured a solid enough sack for the scales. 😅 FishnDave and nomolites 1 1
