fishinwrench Posted June 1 Posted June 1 '92 Johnson 48hp. Compression is equal @ 124# on both cylinders. Obviously low hours. But the gearcase had water in it....and froze. A new gearcase housing is on the way 👍 So she'll get 100% refreshed, given a 2 year warranty, and be ready to stir water pretty soon. Who wants to love her ? 🤗 $3200.00 kjackson, cheesemaster and BilletHead 3
jdmidwest Posted June 18 Posted June 18 That's the nice thing about a jet pump, it drains all of the time. I make it a point to lower the motor on my props when I park them for a while, they collect water when they are on a transom saver. Water can build up there and may bust the seal. That must have been alot of water in the lower unit housing to crack it like that. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

On bodies of water that get a lot of fishing pressure..... especially since the popularity of braided line......these type of failures are becoming more & more common. I see it practically every single day Just look at the twisted splines & braided line on this 115 propshaft ! 🤑 That stuff eats seals like a hacksaw blade ! If you think that jet pumps can't be destroyed when they suck up a few yards of braided line, you're badly mistaken. 😉 So don't neglect to pay those insurance premiums, and be sure to do business with a cool outboard tech that knows how to convince any adjusters that damage from things like fishing line legally falls under the category of "IMPACT DAMAGE". 😊 Daryk Campbell Sr, snagged in outlet 3, nomolites and 1 other 4
jdmidwest Posted June 18 Posted June 18 I have dug line out of a jet impeller, but usually just mono. Trolling motors are worse, they are usually running in shallow water where old line likes to lurk. fishinwrench Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 FYI: The water pump intake on a jet pump will allow line to collect in the pump housing..... and chew your impeller into tiny bits, and those bits can get blown into the powerhead, blocking cooling water passages..... Requiring a complete teardown to clean out. Just something else for ya to worry about. 😅 snagged in outlet 3 1
jdmidwest Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It had a pee hole problem when I inherited it from my buddy, but was not overheating and going into limp mode. The clog has worked its way out and now the tube flows good. Water pump impeller is in good shape, replaced last year. I think most of the clog was sand sucked in on the 11pt.
