The switch thing... we had a weeping willow in the back yard.  Need I say more.

It's not the discipline across the rear that directs a child;  it's the tear in the eye and the care in the heart that teaches and guides.  You never hit a kid in anger - that's abuse.  If you're mad - go cool off and come back to the issue when you can handle it right.  If you can't, you better get yourself straightened out before your kid gets out of hand.

That's my piece on raising and discipling kids.  Today - its a lost art.

You've got to be joking.  Wondering about what's sad about a child worrying about being killed by a classmate or a stranger or whoever with a rifle.  What is sad is how I feel for you right now.

Actually I find it encouraging in this day and age that some adults are accepting that the world is a dangerous place and are attempting to give children tools to deal with it. More could be done along those lines, imo.  And recalling the cold war days with the eminent threat of mutual destruction and the duck and cover routines, I don't recall any of us being especially worried. I think  knowing the danger  was simply that, knowledge that danger exists.

For the rest of my comments I feel like I should apologize, not sure why, but obviously some are offended, the responses and remarks have been enlightening. Carry on.

It is a general breakdown of our society. It has been going on a log time. The hard feelings pass on from one generation to the next. For every injustice or prejudist action there is going to be a reaction. That s how it is and that is how it has always been. There is a song called  " You can't live God if you do not live your neighbor". The song make you think about yourself and your relationships to others.

Agree in lots of ways, but arming the faculty won't be a good idea after a few English teachers or basketball coaches go nuts and open fire during an assembly because their wife is having an affair.

Something has definitely changed since I was a teenager.  Society and the way people think has taken a really bad turn. You can't trust anyone to maintain their senses anymore.  You can't trust teachers, you can't trust doctors, you can't trust cops.  Sports events and music concerts are risky.

Maybe it's better if the folks in Missouri never hear about the things that happen in Florida, and the folks in Florida never hear about what happens in Nevada.   I think we are just too connected now and bad ideas get spread far and wide.  A pissed off kid probably wouldn't think about shooting up his school if he hadn't heard (and watched videos) about it happening at least once a month somewhere else.

The internet is messing up the weaker minds out there.  I know for a fact that I would be way better off if my daughter didn't know what a Hatch-a-mal was !

How many times have we heard of a teacher going on a shooting rampage in this country in the last 50 years?  My guess would be that roughly 40% of teachers in this country would take the training to able themselves to carry within the schools, but i would take that verses the current situation any day. There are faculty that carry now without anyone knowing, just so they are prepared incase of a situation. I would lose my job any day compated to losing my or a kids life, by taking that chance. Having been involved in a law enforcement capacity within schools teaching kids, and chatting with many teachers, most would feel alot safer knowing Mr. Jones next door is trained and prepared to handle little Tommy or Tommys dad if either came into the school  to cause havic.

Why not just keep ALL doors locked during hours, and if a parent needs to come, they go into a seperate area where the kids would come to them, without going into the school.  Same as having kids go thru detectors before entering like some of the big cities do. If a student comes late or leaves early, they go thru detection, the seperate area before entering the school.

What is sad is that kids even have to worry about any of it.  They should be worry free.  It is the parents job to make and keep them secure.

Here are some good answers to the gun control issue for those that wonder about it.

http://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/5-top-gun-control-myths/?utm_source=emarsys&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Chronicle+021718-5+Top+Gun+Control+Myths-2018-02-17+09%3A10%3A31&sc_src=email_2988448&sc_lid=158339564&sc_uid=ZMq35qBQCu&sc_llid=662909&sc_eh=c66e9fb459906f041

I support background checks, it has prevented many felons and ones with criminal past from getting guns legally.  It does nothing to stop the real problems, mental health and stolen guns.  Hipa policies and the general public seem it is not needed to spread info around about the mentally ill that normally commits this kind of crime.  Until something cures this problem, it is bound to happen again.

Someone mentioned it could be a function of over population. I'm inclined to agree. When the Lemming population maxes out they have a mass suicide by running -jumping into the sea, is this a similar instinct? Is population the main cause of war and aggression in general?

This may be a little bit of a stretch. But, do you think that maybe some people (children and adults) have become desensitized to the reality of gun violence and death? I see some of the very realistic first person shooter video games and have to wonder if it dehumanizes the experience? That goes for the modern crop of movies too. Yes, I know most people understand the difference between reality and a game or video but for some it may not be so clear. For example, I have a very good friend that thought when you shoot someone with a large caliber handgun the person would be lifted off the ground and thrown through the air like it shows in the movies. I had to explain the physics to him that it just doesn't work that way. I think our entertainment industry (games & videos) and 24/7 media coverage may be partly at fault of warping the reality of the consequences some folks actions.
