What do you think shelf life is, Wrench?

Hard to say.   I always ask how old the fuel is, and customers either say "oh I just got it the other day", or they say "hell I don't know!".  Everyone these days is sold on the various additives, and the worst thing in the world is old fuel with old additives in it.

When I'm working with a carbureted motor with adjustable idle jets I can tell right away if the fuel is aged because the motor doesn't respond to 1/4 turns of the mixture needle.  With pre-set jets or EFI/DFI engines the only way to tell if aged fuel is causing a problem is to hook up some fresh fuel and see if it helps.    Some motors (like the old GT and XP Johnson/Evinrudes) will run ok on the nastiest fuel you've ever seen.  While others will barely pull themselves off the trailer if it's being fed fuel that is 9 weeks old.

Since you are never sure how fresh it is when you buy it, the question remains unanswerable.  But if you ignore the propaganda that 91 octane is the best choice, then you are assured that the 87 you just bought is reasonably fresh.....or at least more "fresher(?)" .

@fishinwrench is the ethanol in fuel actually bad for the engines themselves or just the fact that it can eat away at hoses? Is this still the case on modern hoses or have they been built to with stand ethanol now? I have never ran any type of additive in my fuels and strictly run e10 87 octane with no issues, but my boat also gets used nearly every weekend and ran quite a bit so it sees fresh fuel nearly every trip out.

I've seen degredation of rubber (seals, diaphragms, hoses, ect.) in OLDER motors, that I blamed on alcohol, but realistically things made from rubber never did last forever, and since they were 15-25 years old anyway....who friggin knows?

I don't have any problems getting motors to run good on 10% ethanol enhanced fuel....as long as it's FRESH.  And I have torn down plenty of motors that have been running on it, and for the life of me I don't see any damage caused that I can blame on it.

The whole ethanol scare smells like a giant propaganda movement to me, but it does have a shorter shelf life than the "GAS" I grew up with.

Here's kind of an interesting (and long!) article about the development of the ETEC outboard that I found on another forum.                                                                          https://www.screamandfly.com/content.php?354-The-Genesis-of-the-Evinrude-E-TEC-Outboard

Thanks for that!  Great stuff and now I feel even better about my decision to go with the G2 despite all of the warnings against it by those "in the know" about such things.

I thought then and am even more convinced now that most of those fellas were way more concerned about what was best for them and their employers then they were about me or anybody else that was considering a G2.

At least three different guys at three different dealerships left me with the words, "You'll be sorry." and two of them sold Evinrudes!  Well, just imagine how many customers decided right then and there that they weren't about to risk their money and conceded to go with a Merc.

That's a lot to overcome for Evinrude (at least in this part of the country) but I'm beginning to think that they just might be winning this fight and I hope they do.

Engine history deal is pretty cool to look at. One of the local techs said he worked on a minor problem a few days ago and the motor had 600 hrs on it. Funny deal was it only had 31 hrs at 5 Grand or over. Sounds like a guide boat. I have 52 hrs on my 2017 and 4 hrs over 5,100 hundred

Wrench here is a question for you. I see guys at the ramps and docks warming up and letting engines idle for long periods. I was told it has no justification, that the engines are ready to go just a minute or two after starting. I see folks litterally put loads of hrs on motors just sitting at the docks or ramps
