I will say that this biologist isn't afraid to admit that he doesn't know everything and wont ever say I do know everything. I consider it a good day when I learn something new. That is one of the reasons I come on here. We (AGFC) are starting to look at the White/Hybrid Striped Bass cross potential. Unfortunately, those that came before us, didn't consider this issue when they introduced hybrids to several fisheries in AR. We in north-central AR tried to discontinue Hybrid Striped Bass stockings in Norfork Lake until we had better information on the impacts of Hybrids in the lake. Unfortunately, we ran into resistance from the local chamber of commerce and angling group and the plan was scrapped. During recent winter gill net samples, we did catch some odd looking White Bass (or at least that is what we ended up calling them).

I appreciate your post, mojorig.  Thanks.

I actually didn't need the smoking gun. As I said.....I don't just come on here and make crap up.  Never have/never will.

You know i never said you did. I don't like what you are seeing either. I need to see it myself but don't want to as it could be a bad thing happening. It needs to be figured out for sure,

The idea of a hybrid male, hybridizing with a female white is interesting.  Wrench you have mentioned it multiple times, and while I am not on LOZ much there are definitely differences in hybrids, some are longer and more aggressive i.e. more striper like in body shape, others well I sometime have a hard time saying exactly what they are, whites, hybrids, hybrid hybrids?   I am not sure on the behavior of whites vs hybrids, I have seen schools of hybrids erupt on Truman, but not many schools of whites blow up like they used to.  Still see some smaller schools of smaller whites on Pomme blow up but not like years gone by.  On Pomme that could easily be a byproduct of the population swings though as it doesn't have wipers.

I love to learn new things as well; interesting indeed.  As I stated in my earlier post I will be looking more closely at the “whites” I catch from this point forward.  Not surprised the folks at Norfork want to keep their revenue stream coming....money talks is not just an old saying.

Since you are collecting via Gill net instead of shocking.....if they aren't totally exhausted when you handle them you'll likely notice than when you grab them across the gills they will do this weird quivering (vibrating) thing, almost like a seizure.   That's usually my first clue since I always land them by quickly grabbing them across the gills covers.  Guys that lip them won't notice that. Honestly trying to lip them with a hook in their mouth is risky, keep doing it and you're gonna get stuck.  Pure whites do not do that quivering weirdness.  Also in the Fall when they are full of shad their bellies extend back further than a pure white.  You can see that, to a degree, in the pic I posted last night.  Belly extends often way beyond the pelvic fins.  I'll try a rib count on them this Spring to see if they have more ribs.   There has to be a bona-fide way of IDing them, I just know when I have one in my hands, simply from experience.....but everyone (besides myself) demands absolute science, done only by a person with a degree on the wall, to confirm anything.

They are easiest for me to identify when they are over 15".  The largest I have caught so far was 21".  I have a pic somewhere but can't seem to find it.  May have gotten lost in my last phone upgrade.

Hey!  Wait a minute!!!  I did all that pissing and moaning to Ameren to not drop the lake for nothing?!?!?

Nope it is there contract with the United States  agency that oversees there water level control  If it goes up to normal they will drop it again.    The whole       thing is to prevent down stream flooding. And it is not all up to LOZ. Truman and LOZ are a  chain of the two largest lakes in the state  Anyone on here who lived in the St louis area during the big flood of the 90s should remember how the river crested and all looked well and all of  sudden it went back into  flood. The second time was a big release from LOZ into the Osage river that caused that. That threat makes the power co and Corp up at Truman very nervous.  Another thing is that Truman is basically  a earthen dam. It could be breached. There have been several emergency  seminars here about what is going to happen if it is ever breached. It is not impossible.

A breech wouldn't be too big of a deal, but if that sucker ever failed and dumped....oh buddy, what a mess that would be!

Can you even imagine the size of the raft of busted docks, boats, and houses that would pile up against Bagnell.   Holy Crap!

Talk about a FEMA project and a GoFundMe page !
