I will never live anywhere with an HOA. It’s not that I’m a pig or can’t abide by some rules. I just don’t like the asshats that it creates. Friend of mine had to get improvements to his deck approved by his HOA. It’s impossible to see it unless you are in his backyard. Pass.

One of the guys that was copied on the email is the guy whom I assumed that complained, but  I could be wrong.
He walks his German Shepard in a very closely obedient military style cadence. The dog is wearing a choker chain. He responds very unenthusiastically when spoken to. Then there’s a couple of older widows who take their jobs very seriously.

Not many places in the burbs without an HOA.  It does keep the hood up to snuff so when you want sell your neighbors dump doesn't drag down prices.  I've always lived in a subdivision with one.

What should drag down the property value is that you will be under such scrutiny while living there.    A simple rule of no unlicensed vehicles, and no tolerance for squalor, is reasonable. But buying a place where you can't have a boat/camper in your driveway, a badminton court set up in your yard, or the freedom to do maintenance on your equipment, is a bit much.   You might as well live in an apartment....So why don't you?

If you were to go outside and practice fly casting in your yard I bet your neighbors would be peeking through the curtains while on the phone with the president of the HOA......"This guy is out here waving a stick around and I need to check the mail....but I'm scared to go out there.   Help!"

Me too -- 30 years, two neighborhoods and never a problem. They serve their purpose and you know the rules going in.
