Bill,

A question regarding the Garmin screen shot. 

1) Is the bait you describing the bait ball on the upper right of the screen and the bass the long string below or 2) Are they all bait and the bass are not in the screen shot posted?  

If the answer is (1) the bass is the long string below the bait ball, how can you distinguish it from the bait?

I think the one he is using is the Motorguide Tour. IT is a traditional style motor. The Motor Guide Tour Pro is the one that hasnt been released yet that has the spot lock

That is the old troller, the new one is not available yet.  That screen shot is not the one where Mike caught the fish under it.  It is a random shot with a bait ball.  He has it turned up and the other green you see are just anomalies.

Is Mike altering the RC or McS in any way? Fishing it out of the box? Anything?

Nope, ties it on and flings it on the RK.  On the McStick he adds dots or wire to the hooks just like all of us depending on surface temps.  The  McS. wanted to float up a bit the other day and he modified it just a bit.  He likes it level or just a slight sink tail down, again just like the rest of us.

It is 8:30 here this morning Sunday and there are boats running.  I've seen 3 and it is a totally nasty day out there.  I bet there was Ice on the ramps.

So I’m assuming he caught the “Big brown fish” which was the 5 pounder I guess under the bait ball. 
I’ve seen a bunch of people get directly over the bait ball and vertical spoon or Silver buddy thru the bait ball. It Always seems the smaller fish are right there up against and closer the the bait ball and the larger fish are a little deeper and just grab the “easy pickings” . So Mikes technique of casting past the bait ball and allowing the swimbait to pendulum down was the ticket to catch the bigger fish. The bait would only contact the bigger fish and not need to go thru the keepers....Nice!

I'm sure that knowing the fall rate of that bait combined with the size of the bait ball all comes from experience. You would also need to figure how far to cast depending on the size of the bait ball.

Thanks Bill,  any information is good as I don't know what the "rest of us" do.  Its been almost 20 years since the last time I was on TR.  

I hope that the weather is better on a weekend so I can put some of these tips into play in my new to me recently acquired boat.

I am guessing one foot per second, just like every other bait ever made...........😎
