top_dollar Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 2 hours ago, tjm said: If one reads the papers and historical posturing by politicians prior to 1858 from an objective view, slavery was not the reason for the war it was just a justification of it, that war was about state and regional power on a national level and certain individuals played states' rights against the slavery issue to bring about what they thought would be a new agrarian country. The whole slave issue is with England for importing Africans to start with and for allowing an African to become the first slave owner in the Colonies, any ill will by descendants of slaves or demands for reparation need to be aimed at England and the African nations that supplied the first generation of slaves. By the time of the secession adoption of English laws and established precedents of property rights was old stuff, the politics of the time were based quite a bit on personalities and familial kinships rather than any philosophical creeds. There is no logical way to use any of that in making present day policies or judgements anymore than we can catch the fish we ate last week again today. Our ancestors don't have anything to do with how we chose to live and to assign blame to a living person for what we imagine his ancestor did is stupidity. In 1845, Texas, in its declaration of secession, cited the federal governments inaction when northern states were protecting the rights of fugitive slaves from being extradited back to Texas. So Texas, didn't give a rats posterior about states rights, they just wanted to own slaves and they really didn't care how. The States of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Iowa, by solemn legislative enactments, have deliberately, directly or indirectly violated the 3rd clause of the 2nd section of the 4th article [the fugitive slave clause] of the federal constitution, and laws passed in pursuance thereof; thereby annulling a material provision of the compact, designed by its framers to perpetuate the amity between the members of the confederacy and to secure the rights of the slave-holding States in their domestic institutions-- a provision founded in justice and wisdom, and without the enforcement of which the compact fails to accomplish the object of its creation. Some of those States have imposed high fines and degrading penalties upon any of their citizens or officers who may carry out in good faith that provision of the compact, or the federal laws enacted in accordance therewith. https://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_texsec.asp So much for the states rights argument. oneshot Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I have talked with some about the Under Ground Railroad. Like they said it was a matter of people not wanting to come so far North. Take anyway you want but a Southern Black Woman will take better care of herself than Northern. oneshot

Johnsfolly Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Who knows about the issues that resulted in this flag being flown over Key West?

fishinwrench Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 The rebel flag had nothing to do with slavery until some group of idiots decided it did. It didn't start "offending" anyone until the 1990's and slavery was abolished quite some time before that. So WTF are y'all even talking about? Deadstream, tho1mas and Terrierman 1 1 1

BilletHead Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Sheldon Cooper could tell us everything about flags. Johnsfolly, Ham and Terrierman 2 1 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead " One thing in life is for sure. If you are careful you can straddle the barbed wire fence but make one mistake and you will be hurting" BilletHead P.S. "May your fences be short or hope you have long legs" BilletHead
fishinwrench Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 What are you crying about? The rebel flag was proudly displayed by plain old country boys/girls for many years, none of which had, or even wished they had, a slave. Every Skynyrd, 38Special, Blackfoot, ect. album had a rebel flag on it. It was displayed in Smoky and the Bandit, Dukes of Hazard, Stoker Ace, and a bunch of other hit movies/shows.....and nobody ever made a fuss about it.....Then suddenly, almost overnight, having a rebel flag became worse than screaming "Goddammit" in church. People are so stupid sometimes, with all their "things that mean things". What are all you tatted-up individuals gonna do tomorrow when society decides that tattoo sleeves mean that you are a wife beating scumbag that shoots heroin and can't be hired for any job besides being a plumbers helper? And another thing..... I'm not "racist" but black dudes, and white boys that wanna be black... still need to pull their freakin'pants up! Ignorant $#!t ! tjm, Terrierman and Deadstream 1 1 1
