Al, I totally agree with the fact that the setting is one of the most important factors in the experience.  I love to catch all fish and to just be outdoors, but there's nothing better than stream smallmouth. 

 

I bought a jet boat a couple of years ago and am still amazed with the shallow running capabilities; however, there's just something about sitting on top of the water on a paddlecraft and feeling the pull of a large smallie that can't be beat. 

 

Sharing those experiences and helping others find success is very rewarding. I always pick up something new from your posts Al. You've helped me to understand how to read the river gauges, how to distinguish spotted bass vs largemouth, and have encouraged me to use my baitcaster more with topwater and cranking baits. A topwater take is like watching a brutal knockout punch. The baitcaster is so efficient and accurate and puts a lot of fish in the boat. However, my personal preference is to feel the pull and the challenge of landing creek smallies on light-action spinning gear while finesse fishing.

 

Lastly, visualizing a particular bait in your mind, creating it, and then landing a pb fish with it is exhilarating!  Words can not explain the emotions when you see others across the country catching fish and sharing experiences with your baits also. There is a lot of bad in this world, but this community of like-minded lovers of nature makes me realize that there is still a lot of good out there.

I love fly fishing for trout in small streams in beautiful locations, particularly the mountain west. There's the clean air, the smell of the pines, and just being right there in the middle of it all. The silence, but for sound of the water.

I really enjoy reading the water, strategizing the approach, figuring out the current, and getting a fly in the right spot with that perfect drift. I get real satisfaction out of handling a tricky setup well and fooling a fish. It's always best when it happens on top, but getting a nymph down deep into an impossible spot and getting one out is great too. 

I also love walking a field with my two Brittanys watching them do what they've been bred and trained to do. It's a real thrill to see them snap to a halt and freeze up on a bird. It's also a thrill (sometimes a heart-stopper) to flush a bird, then make the shot and watch a good retrieve afterwards. 

Much of my enjoyment comes from the anticipation and planning of a trip to a new place. Once there, I like to spend some time getting to know the place -- which is always more than just where to fish or hunt. I like talking to the locals, listening to what they've got to say abut the area, finding the best place to eat, etc. 

It's always about the total experience for me and whoever I'm with.

I have been blessed to fish in different biomes...for me it’s the big 3 

scenery, company, and quarry...

I remember a trip to Lamar lake one time with a buddy of mine...we jitter poled in the Open pockets In the water willow.

it was a blast! 18” of power pro tried to the tip of 16 foot glass composite poles...buzz baits, Johnson silver Minnows with pork....devils horse all produced, hand poling in the fish was more fun than I thought...caught 20 some odd fish 2-5 pounds...def something everyone should try at least once... old school can be fun....

   That's a  fly rod catch right? Remember I am one of those high brow fly fishing snobs 🤣. Those fish are fun no matter how you fight them in.
