We’re going to spend a week down in Florida well after next. I mailed some of my tackle down ahead- my trout stuff. We rented a vrbo house on a key, on the inside so we have a small pier to fish from.

I’m inexperienced at fishing for fish that have teeth. Any suggestions?  Not after big fish, just whatever pulls on the line.

Of course I’m taking my marabous...

Excellent!  I'm sure you'll have a great time, Phil!

I can't think of too much down there that you'd have to worry about cutting your line...Bluefish aren't normally that far south, are they?  Maybe lizardfish...those little guys have sliced through my superlines like a hot knife many times.  If you DO decide to use a metal leader, I'd recommend titanium leaders over steel.  Steel kinks pretty easily, but titanium won't.

Curious about the mailing option.   Who holds your boxes? If they arrive before you?

We used to fish the mangroves from a kayak with shrimp, caught a ton of mangrove snappers.  Nothing big, but good eating.  White or chartreuse jigs can catch you a speck, redfish, or snook in same areas.  We used mono.

Where in Florida?  Someone might be able to dial you in on something.

I've been to several areas over and over so I could help if it's one of those.

Bluefish can be thick off the coast of Louisiana.

Ladyfish can cut you off.

Needlefish too.

Barracuda of course.

try a little fluro leader that might help, but I fished 2 and 6 lb mono in the surf without too much of an issue.

A couple feet of 25lb flourocarbon is fine for what you will catch in that area (Snook, redfish, and sea trout). Might step that up if going for large tarpon, or steel if going for sharks or mackeral.

@Phil Lilley I agree that putting on some heavier fluoro like Ham and Gavin suggested would work better than steel. There are some fish that will shy from those premade steel leaders. If you are fishing lures vs bait you should have less issues even with the toothy guys, since hookups will likely be with the bait near the outside of the mouth. You may lose some marabous if a toothy fish inhales the bait even with a fluoro leader.

Good luck and can't wait to see the post ;).

A section of 25 fluorocarbon is plenty for most everything...things like reds/specks/ flounder just mono is fine... long light spoons with a snap swivel and mirror lures will be plenty...they don’t toss feathers much as fish ruin it quick...live bait is your friend.....watch some YouTube fishing from the area you will be fishing....
