EPA mandated clean emissions.  And Mercury Marine's desire to always be first. 

They rushed everything to comply...... but their main goal (of course) was to remain the fastest outboard on the market.    

As with everything else that moves.... Things that go fast... don't go fast for very long.  Increased Performance always comes with a price.  

Where they really won the game, was in marketing.  They give alot away for free, just to ensure that a black motor gets mounted on nearly every boat that is sold.   

The majority of their sales is SALTWATER, and no matter how well designed an outboard is..... it can only last so long in the salt.

 Johnson/Evinrude built freshwater motors that truly were designed to last..... but the shrewd marketing geniuses at Brunswick outsmarted them.   So your freshwater Merc....no matter how well you try to maintain it, is probably only going to last as long as a motor subjected to continuous saltwater use.   Therefore, parts for Mercs start becoming NLA (no longer available) after about 7 years.   2 years after the warranty expires.

It's a conspiracy. 😳

Same with cars and trucks.  Don't waste your money on a turbo 6.  Just get the 8.  It will perform better, last longer and use about the same amount of fuel.

Folks seem to be super thin skinned these days.  Can't make a joke.  Can't kid around.  Whatever happened to the "Sticks and stones..."  So many folks only know how to tap on a keyboard and don't converse anymore.  When standing next to someone and actually talking it is far easier to understand what someone means.  If one or the other takes offense then it can be settled immediately.  Folks just need to lighten up and laugh a bit.  And for the fishing news local lake running 81 to 83 degrees with water slightly stained.😁

Personally I refuse.  I'm here for recreational purposes, and because I have friends here.

  The moderators act as though everyone has to read EVERYTHING, and that just isn't so.  Anyone can block anyone else, and anyone can just NOT READ certain topics or certain posts.   

When you pick up a newspaper, do you read it all ?   Or do you only read what interests you?     Have the moderators here ever considered that everyone that comes here isn't solely interested in Tenkara fishing for chubs?
