BilletHead Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 How many of you use trailer bunk slicks? Griz and Ham have them on their jet boat trailers. Have seen them in use by Griz so decided to give them a try. Both of these guys read me the riot act on how to use and what to look for and changes in loading and unloading on steep ramps and in current. My jet is thick hulled and heavy. If I don't get it fully pulled to front or off a bit in the back, I have a hard time cranking it up bad enough I have had to get help especially centering on back. I ordered about enough to do my bunks. I say about enough because I was short a foot on each side. No problem cut a couple sections from a nylon cutting board. Got them mounted at a local city lake. These are a gamechanger for Pat and me. Actually amazing. You don't have to back in so far for loading and unloading. Cranking is soooooooo easy. I will let @Ham and @grizwilson read you the riot act if they want. I have been on ramps so shallow I have had to abandon launching. Dutch Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 I’ve read about them and looked into something similar when I needed new bunks but decided to stay with carpet and had Tom at Championship do them for me.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 I have some slick covers that go over my bunks on my bass boat. They were on when i got the boat, i dont like them at all on a bigger boat. They are so slick it is scary. I dont undo my strap until my prop is almost in the water. And when i load i will pull up the trailer and as soon as i put it in neutral it will slide back a foot or more, so i actually have to crank it up by hand farther than if i just had carpet. I see guys all the time at the ramps with carpet load the boat no straps on and the guy in the truck just pulls them out. Makes me cringe everytime because im so used to how slick mine is.... Im sure on a small lighter weight boat i would like them but i def. wouldnt put them on another bass boat
MOPanfisher Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 We replaced the carpeted boards on a boat at work with solid PVC boards, more out of concern over Zebra Mussel transfer than anything. I have seen several folks over the years with boats on the ramp that said we'll that never happend before. Maybe so but it happened this time. I always crank it up tight and make sure the "Oops chain" is also attached incase the strap or winch fails. bfishn, nomolites and dtrs5kprs 3
MrGiggles Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 I used to have PVC gutters on mine. I didn't really notice a big difference in loading and unloading, so I put carpet back on. I also couldn't find any that would fit well over a full size 2x4. Just like anything else it can be the best thing ever for one and a nightmare for another. My boat is not that hard to crank up, and I like to drop the winch while backing down. I won't pull the boat out of the water without the winch hooked, but when the bunks are dry and the boat is pulled up hard against the bow stop I don't worry too much. -Austin

They sell the three inch for the 2X4 and it's all you need. These slicks just attach on top of the existing bunks. Guess your configuration may be different than mine. Ham Posted April 7, 2022 Posted April 7, 2022 I’m Glad they’re working for you Marty. With proper caution, they are a Great addition for some boat trailers. grizwilson and BilletHead 2 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
