Poppers are something I do not know how to do. Suggestions? The surface fly I use 80% of the time and have probably caught more SMB on than any/all other flies- https://www.jackgartside.com/step_gurgler.htm The foam sheets I use are from Dollar Tree, Walmart , etc. I don't think color matters too much, but white is easy to see, for me and for the fish. This is also pretty easy to tie- https://www.jackgartside.com/step_bass_bug.htm The only other surface fly I use much is Tap's Bug, but it's deer hair and for that reason can be frustrating at the beginning. http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/panfish/part97.php and https://midcurrent.com/videos/how-to-tie-taps-bug/ I've never had much luck with standard poppers, as in 46 years I have never caught one bass on them, so have no recommendation. I probably don't have the patience to fish poppers correctly though, because they are popular. Your Clousers and Woolly Buggers are a good start and with a Gurgler might be all I'd fish for most of a season. The SJ worm is like the poppers, in about 30 years of occasionally trying them have never caught a single fish. I also use a simple white or yellow marabou crappie jig in 1/32 oz in places where I can stand on a bank or riprap and flip rather than cast it into a deep hole, fe, bridge abutment. trythisonemv and snagged in outlet 3 2
trythisonemv Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 Look up alvin dedeaux popper on YouTube. Super easy and very effective. Also that little frog fly I came up with is dynamite. nomolites and Johnsfolly 2
Nick Adams Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 I've picked up a few things from https://www.bigyflyco.com/ lately. Really quick shipping and reasonable pricing. So far so good. snagged in outlet 3 1

I can get some stuff together in the next week or so and get it in the mail. I'll make sure it's all stuff that won't stress that 6 wt too much and make it fairly easy to cast. I also include some gurglers since I'm the only one that ties them correctly. 😁 grizwilson, nomolites, FishnDave and 5 others 5 2 1

Orvis Hydros 6 wt weight forward floating warm water line, Rio three pack 12# tapered leader. $367 and free shipping. Not a "bargain" outfit, but one that the reviews suggest is a good beginning. This setup fits my hatred of cheap and my wariness of spending money on something new. I'd recommend upgrading your reel to the Lamson Liquid for the extra $17 or whatever. I had an Ion, and felt it was heavy. The Lamson feels lighter and I've had nothing but great performance from Lamson reels. Just my opinion, and fly reels may not matter much...but I do think you'll like it better. snagged in outlet 3 and rps 2
