Revisions for Big River in the new edition of the Paddler's Guide...

I bought one of those years ago but it was only working in wide open places and I took it back. It might have been accurate to within a tenth mile but I'm not sure it was, it kinda put me off gps.

Several years ago there was government regulations on accuracy more so than now.  They even would change up the accuracy allowed without notice.  That’s changed and accuracy is now within feet.

I also have the old Magellan with the topo map though I haven’t used it in years.  It was the only game in town at the time.  We used to geocache with it all over the midwest.

I used it for geocaching too, back when I had free time.  I still carry it mushroom hunting and mark spots where I find them.

Actually had to break it out a few years ago on peck ranch when I was turned around on some trails.  I had them downloaded on there.

Now, Garmin Explorer is on my phone with offline maps.  They work great when cell is offline.  Gps signals are stronger and more accurate than they used to be.  Still have Delorme paper atlas behind seat when all else fails.

My Paddlers book shows 0.0 as Cherokee Landing.  Is that the same thing as Mounts?  Anyway, I've never floated above there.  It's hard to imagine 30 more miles above that.  Has to be pretty skinny water.

Mounts is several miles above Cherokee landing, which is closer to the state park.  The mounts access is just above where HWY 8 crosses the river (big river outdoors now).   The highest I have put in was hwy M bridge, and it is floatable on down from there.

One thing worth mentioning is that you will be doing some serious paddling as there is barely any current.  From mounts to leadwood is about the longest 8 mile float imaginable.  You're mostly paddling through long slow pools, and dragging boats over 6 inch riffles.  Almost everyone who does that stretch overestimates how far they have gone, and still have miles left when they are wanting to take out.  It is usually some frustrated guy, and his very unhappy spouse. 🤣

You can always tell, by the look on the females face, how miserable the poor guy must be, when they ask....."How much further to so&so?".

That is so true! I have to (get to) break the news they still got a few miles to leadwood.  The poor guy usually has to do all the work while the gf just pouts.

Lasy year I had a guy accuse me of lying to him when I told him the takeout was right around the corner. I guess some guys had already told him that about 3 miles ago. Everyone's mood got a whole lot better when they realized I wasn't lying. I don't think it was the wife though. I think it was the gang of kids they had with them.

@Al Agnew how in the world do you measure miles and tenths of miles on winding twisting  streams? And did MDC revise all the streams for this new edition?

Google maps will let you trace a line and give you a measurement.
