jdmidwest Posted January 23 Posted January 23 They were reporting a "Historical Event" here locally. It came up in a conversation today, I made the statement that it is probably true. By Tuesday, after it all passes thru, its all History. So, it will be historical. History today, I almost hit the same DA in Menards parking lot when he pulled out in front of me twice. First time, he was trying to run a stop sign within the lot. Then sped up and pulled out in front of me again while I was on big road and he was coming out of the parking lot on another exit. The sheep were herding to scramble for supplies in hoards. It was a madhouse. I have loved being out in snow storms to hunt and fish. Have had many successful trips. The fish don't mind and most of those trips I had the water to myself. Tracking and seeing deer with snow on the ground, especially that first snow of the hunting season, makes for a fun hunt. Squirrels do tend to hunker down in their nests and are usually not out during the snow fall. What was not fun was if there was icy conditions to the roads for the travel. snagged in outlet 3, nomolites, Daryk Campbell Sr and 3 others 6

Of course it's not snowing yet but have two big Fox squirrels behind the house looking for food at 20 degrees. Falling the rest of the day. I believe critters can anticipate what is going to happen. Ready to hunker down for a few days. We are thawing out eight of their family for squirrel chowder. We saw well over a hundred deer in just a couple of fields before dark last evening. I used to try and plan to hunt the evenings before a storm. Quillback and BilletHead 2

Bird hunting was great in the snow. Where we hunted pheasants in WA, after the first two weeks in the season they'd do nothing but run on you and it was next to impossible to get close enough to one to shoot it. But when it snowed, they'd hold, the dogs could find them and it was like opening day all over again. Had to be right after a good snow, if you waited a week, the birds would have it figured out. Quail and chukar would hold better too. But that was 25 years ago and I was in a lot better shape. It was great hunting but slogging through a foot of snow all day would wear you out. There was always that rush to get out to western KS for opening day, but often it was just plain hot, vegetation was still green, dogs didn't do as well and there were too many people. More tradition and social than serious hunting. I always enjoyed the later hunts, even though the birds were smarter, and I really liked it when there was snow. Like you said, the birds sat tighter, the dogs scented better, and there were less folks out. But...there were some brutally cold and windy days along with that too. This was a few years back -- a preserve hunt with ness 2.3. Our beloved Max's last hunt. He was completely pooped and ready to go by the time this pic was taken. Both dogs are in here but a little hard to see. Ruby about dead enter, Max closer in. ColdWaterFshr, Quillback, Johnsfolly and 1 other 4 John
