  1. Hey OA crew,

Hope everyone is having a great end to their summers. Part of our new tradition is a labor day stay at Lilley's! I'm getting pretty excited and was wondering what bite has been best around the resort area? Is the hopper bite still a thing?

I will have a bunch of family with me so i will only have a chance at throwing off the dock early in the am and late at night but we do have a boat rental Saturday morning and i think it would be awesome to put my 5 year old on his first trout. Any suggestions on areas to target with worms or powerbait would be greatly appreciated. Of course I'll ask the staff when I'm there as well.

Hope everyone has a great fall season!

  2. Started at 5:00 this morning to beat the heat and glad I did...had some decent luck.

Started throwing a jerkbait and missed a few shortstrikes so switched to a black 1/16th ounce jig and caught 5 or 6 and lost several more...all rainbows in the 14-18" range..when the jig bite stopped i switched back to the jerkbait and caught 3 more rainbows and a small brown

Things slowed down pretty considerably after the fog burned off but i did manage a pretty little largemouth on a 110+1 and a Beautiful smallie on a hair jig

it had been way too long since i last got out so im glad a gave it a try..happy weelend everyone!

  3. I went on Saturday, glad I did! Had two hours free from the kids so i was basically sprinting thru everything to see all i could. The shuttle was super easy from the Battlefield mall, only $10 to get in, got complementary bass pro 5 gallon pail when i got there..saw Johnny Morris about 10 feet from me, brushed shoulders with the dude perfect guys, walked past Edwin Evers taking pictures, got to talk with the guys in St. Croix booth which was fun and there really were some decent deals to be found..lews had a 1/2 price custom xp spinning combo, st croix had $25 off the split grip premiers, pflueger had $20 off several reels, etc.

I just really liked experiencing the wow factor, it really was like the super bowl experience for a fishing nut and i ate that up.

There certainly were tons of folks there but with all the extra tents, it didnt feel crowded at all.

Id love to go see another one and get some family to come.

Chased the whites after work on Tuesday. I knew that the forecasted rain and cold would have them on the move again afterwards. I tried Taylor first but when I pulled up there were only a handful of rigs in the parking lot, never a good sign. After fishing for 20 minutes without a bite I jumped back in the car and headed to Orleans. I walked upstream towards Taylor and started picking up a fish here and there. Ended up with my limit and threw back 4 dinks over the next 2 hours. Hopefully eventually we will get consistent warm weather and our nights will stop dipping into the 30's so that the water temps will stabilize, gotta love spring time in the Ozarks!

Hey buddy, good to see you posting again! Last outing I had was March 4th when I came and talked with you quickly before jumping in the john boat..that day was nuts!!...between the 6 of us in two boats, we boated 150+ fish..I'm hoping you and I can find an evening to chase walleyes up river a bit further this year and duplicate our trip from last April.

Just FYI......That "Hot Sauce" Teflon based oil, that everyone says is the greatest thing ever, will keep the gears from retaining grease.   It's known otherwise as Slick-50.

Probably the worst thing you can do to brass gears, unless you can keep them immersed in it.... which you can't.

So i have been using Rem oil as the lube on the bearings...does that have the same negative effect on preventing the gears from retaining grease?

  6. Question for you spinning reel junkies...i have a size 25 pflueger president that is nearly new..the first few trips that i took it out in colder weather i noticed it would start to feel a little sticky...still smooth but felt like the greased parts were just gumming up maybe...once i get it home and warmed up it goes back to fine...does anyone have a recommendation for a special gear grease that is good to colder temps? I've cleaned out the excess from the factory and regreased lightly with the lews spinning reel grease and same problem..

I've had several other pfluegers, especially the cheaper trions that have always been butter smooth with no maintenance needed but for some reason this size 25 president hasn't been as good.

I know its just a $60 reel but wondering if i should try any other tricks before demoting it to a backup and replacing with a Shimano.

    Thanks!

  7. Picked a good day to make a trip! The jerkbait bite was very good from about 6:30 to 7:30 up near the cable with some variety mixed in..picked up two decent rainbows in the 16-18" range, one small walleye, and then the 3rd rainbow was an absolute bruiser...didn't put a tape to him but the net was not big enough..I'm guessing somewhere in the 20-22" range with shoulders and a gut..20211126_064608.jpg

    20211126_064635.jpg

I switched to a black jig for a few casts and landed a tank of a sucker fish..he even went airborn a few times..that gave me a good laugh..switched back to the jerkbait and landed a chubby spotted bass and a few casts later a nice largemouth, my first on Taneycomo

    20211126_075532.jpg

Then the jerkbait went dead so i switched to throwing a black jig and landed 2 more really nice rainbows before calling a day.

There were a few other folks fishing the outlets but other than that I had the place to myself which was wonderful.

    Happy Thanksgiving to everybody.

  8. Hey Gang,

Happy early Thanksgiving. I will have a day or two in early December to spend the day fishing...im deciding on whether to head down and do my usual thing on Taneycomo or pack up the kayak and head towards Stockton and get in on the tail end of the fall bite for the crappie and walleye.

I'm not looking for any spots..just wondering if the timing might be right to still find the fish in shallow areas like creeks and hugging shore spots that are easy enough to get to with a yak. Or if by then everything will have moved offshore...im a pretty terrible offshore fisherman...in fact im not that great of a fisherman period, but i sure try hard anyway!

I do have a Garmin on the kayak so i might be able to find a few pieces of structure to fish out a little deeper...

    Thanks in advance!.

You likely answered your own question in the first paragraph. Getting the jig down to the bottom is key unless it's cloudy and they are midging heavily. Keeping the jig down in heavy generation is really hard for those not used to it. They definitely scatter more when it's off, but you can typically see schools of them swimming around. Find an area with fish and just cast everywhere until you get bit and then fish that area for a bit before the school moves on. Rainbows in still water can be anywhere. Areas where you have a shallow flat next to deeper water is where I start. Fish shallow and deep and figure out where the active fish are relating. Cooper Creek Flats and Lilley's up to the first row of docks on the left are good areas for that.

Thanks Seth, makes sense..with no water running, what weight jig are you throwing? Do you count it down? Or are you just waiting until you feel bottom before you start jigging?

If the water is off to me 2 pound line is a must.  Water off I don't straight jig fish near as much as I do if it's running.  If the water is off I'm almost always throwing a micro jig with an indicator or a midge on a fly rod.  Sunny, no wind is tough tough tough and I always try to use natural colors for those conditions.  Early mornings before the sun is high I'll throw a micro jig with an orange head but it's usually a different ball game as the sun gets on the water.  If you see chop on the water fish the chop on the water, period.  If the water is running and your throwing jigs Seth is right get it down.  I throw 2 pound test 100% of the time regardless of year or conditions but it's a must with the water off in my opinion.

Thanks Travis, I tied on about a 6 foot section of 2 pound leader to my 4 pound mainline bit i think with how many people swear by 2 pound im going to go ahead and setup a rig with 2 pound mainline and start practicing with that...i do think the thinner line helps get the jig down quicker as well.

When you're doing the microjig under a float are you just trowing it out and letting it sit/move in the wind? Or do you twitch it along with a slow retrieve?

  11. Well our trip ends tomorrow morning and even tho I didn't fish nearly as much or as well as I would've liked, we still had a great weekend at Lilley's....Saturday morning was really the only honest fishing effort I put in with 3 hours on the boat rental and not much to show for it..one stocker sized rainbow up by short creek on a black jig. I think I'm still learning how the heck to jig fish from a boat...only my second time doing it and I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong because I don't seem to have any trouble catching fish on jigs from the bank in waders..Not sure if I'm not letting sink deep enough? If any boat jigging pro's want to chime in with some tips I am all ears..this trip the water was off mostly, last time they were running 4 units, both times I stunk 😆.

Also, what are some go to tactics that people use for when the water is off during the day? I felt lost without current to drift and seams to target..

I spent 20 minutes Saturday morning and Saturday evening fishing from the dock and managed a small brown and a couple small rainbows on a jerkbait so that was fun...also had a first...i was working my jerkbait back to the dock, got swiped at by a fish and missed the hookset,  reeled in and about a 1" long sculpin was impaled on the tail hook of my shadow rap and was still flipping around...only explanation i could think of was that the fish that bit me spit up the sculpin when he hit...

Got a chance to talk with @crazy4fishin both mornings on the dock before the sun came up and had a great time swapping fishing stories..we will have to setup some time to actually fish together next time!

Kids loved the playground and swimming pool and we enjoyed how quiet our stay was and how great all the staff is here. We already booked our stay for next Labor Day and I'm sure we'll be back before then.

Hope everyone is ready for some fall fishing!

  12. Anyone from the forum going to be staying at Phil's over labor day weekend? I dont think ill get to do much fishing since Ill have my wife and two little ones down but it would still be good to meet some more folks in person! I may beg and plead for a night excursion after everyone is asleep

  13. I would've loved to see the law get changed...i would've just stuck single point hooks on all my jerkbaits and continued to slay em!  Haha really tho, lets just all get along...fisherman arguing against other fisherman just seems wrong, ive bonded with so many great folks over the love of fishing. Everyone is proud of how they taught themselves to catch fish but there's way more than one way to do it. That's why i like learning from other folks..i am a waayy better Fisherman than i was 3-4 years ago, some of it I've learned myself, a lot of it from others.

    Cheers!

From there to the dam is where 80% of the tournaments are being won right now.   There are bass near 12-25' brush piles, there are bass suspended under big condo docks, and there are bass in the very backends of coves hiding under anything they can find to hide under.

Thanks fot the reply...it looks like the place we're staying has a courtesy dock and some slips...any advice on what to throw around docks? Topwater, wacky, jig, or something different?

  15. Howdy everybody,

I am headed up to stay in the Mermaid Cove Marina and RV resort this weekend with my family and wanted to see if anyone has info to share as far as fishing prospects in that area? I might have some time in the mornings to sneak out before everyone is awake and throw some topwater from the bank/docks or I might see if there are any docks to fish from with my 4 year old and his snoopy rod to catch some panfish.

    Any info is appreciated!

Hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Decided to see what the night time fuss was all about on my first night in town.  I have been searching for a lure that I thought would work and perhaps hadn't been fished on Taney before or not much with all the pressure these fish get.  Well I think I found it a couple weeks ago so decided to try it last night. We caught a ton of fat bows up to 19 inches on it. The highlight though was a 24 inch 7 pound brownie followed 15 mins later by another 20 inch fat brownie. To say I was pumped was an understatement!

How cool! Glad you gave the night game a try Travis! You've put in enough time on Taneycomo, glad to see you rewarded

Me and my buddy Rob are a few hours away from a night time adventure.

Hoping we can find some of these big boys that are moving up.

We're going to sling some jerks and hopefully get Rob his first trout on his new Mike Riffel  rod.

Super pumped to get down and take advantage of the flows if they keep this pattern up.

I'll try to keep this thread updated with some pics if we catch anything

    Good luck!
