in low light conditions a slit eyed snake pupil can seem round, if your that close with a cotton mouth you just asking for it!

copperheads are our most common Venomous snake, poisonous is disingenuous term...if a peach was poisonous, you eat it and die...if it bit you and you died then its venomous!

that little fact cost me a grade point in University never forgot it....

As a note I have seen more timber rattlers than cotton mouths another rare snake here

floods do move many critters around, and a 6 foot timber rattler dropping in your lap will get your attention FAST!

 

Well I grew up in OK fishing farm ponds and small lakes. I know what a water snake looks like. I also know what a cotton mouth looks like and real rattle snakes too. 

There are plenty of cotton mouths in Missouri. And another little secret for ya. They aren't aggressive if you leave them the hell alone.

   True that. They will swim up to you or your boat for a look see, inquisitive to what the heck are you. Not to bite your face off . No black or green mambas here to hunt you down,

When I was 8 years old I was turned loose in my own float tube on the Oklahoma ponds. Those water moccasins would always come to investigate. Looking back on it now it probably just looked like a good place to sun for them. At that age I was scared of them but never felt threatened and they never acted aggressive. Neither did the diamondbacks that I ran across. It would scare you at first because you would always hear the rattle before you saw the snake but again if you leave them alone there was no aggression. Heck even the buffalo that snuck us behind me one day wasn't aggressive. Probably just curious. But at 10 or 11 it was a pretty traumatic experience. But I had been taught enough to know that being calm was a better option than being a screaming idiot. 

People are more dangerous than any creature you will find around here outside of Sasquatch.

A few years back I was floating on a raft around our dock and fell asleep.  I woke up to find a snake laying on my lake - scared the crap out of me - but it turned out to be a northern water snake - we have quite a few that swim around our dock - I do see a few copperheads that like to cross our road every year.

Euro Carping is only one thing I do,..... I trap, hunt fossils, arrowheads, garden, explore..........here is a pic of a breeding pair of bigfoot(s) shoal creek in 1998....you get my point

if you say so..........did you see where we got a trophy carp fishery established in Austin's Texas lady bird lake? (formally town lake)  or Lady Bird Lake in Austin, there is a daily limit of one (1) trophy-sized common carp measuring 33 inches or more. 

you should see the plans we have cooking now! why all kinds of folks having fun screaming drags etc...

Somewhere in the early 60's the name was changed because nobody dared venture into that creek with that name.  Could hardly sell property, a home  or much less a dock in those parts. True story. 87% of all cottonmouths in Missouri live in Beardsley. Don't go in that creek if you know whats good for you.
