A note I just picked up as far as Outboard Engine sales US, not Global

Mercury 51% market share 

Yamaha 37% 

BRP  5%

Honda, Suzuki  3% each

Others 1%

World Wide Outboard sales is Yamaha 63%

At 5% market share they made the right move. Could license the E-Tec to Mercury. If mercury wants make them. Would rather have a Yamaha than a Mercury. Yamaha 4 strokes are very quiet and reliable. Yamaha’s are the only outboard motors you see in Canada & Alaska. Gosh I hate Bass Pro! They turn everything they touch into homogenized crap!

If you go down to the Florida keys everything is either Yamaha or Suzuki. I have To admit I've been a long time Evinrude fan. If I had to buy a 4 stroke though it would be a Yamaha.

Just about every industry is heavily consolidated.   It has been legislatively encouraged for about 50 years now.  It's an oligopoly.  Not necessarily a terrible thing, but they do not encourage competition.

What's so great about them? I have a 2000 or 2002 evinrude on my boat.  It runs ok, although hates trolling.  My brother and I are looking to put a new motor, guess I should hang on to it?

The only reason a motor "hates trolling" is because it isn't set up properly for it.   If you want it to love trolling, I can make that happen. 

Motor height, trim position, prop, and tune.

A chainsaw doesn't cut worth a crap if the chain is dull and the fuel is mixed wrong.

I can see that the 2 cycle is the issue.  I have a 2006 225hp that has been a really good outboard.  The only problem I have had was having to replace the oil injection system.  Ulrich did it and it was expensive!  After that, I thought that my next boat would be a 4 cycle to avoid that unnecessary cost. Gone are the days of putting a quart of oil into a tank.

I'd be curious to see how many hours my 2013 150 Etec has on it at low RPM's from all of the trolling I do during snagging and gigging season. No issues at all so far. With XD100 set on the 100:1 ratio, it sips oil.

It is actually a 1995 70hp (E70TLEOR).  I have to fix the trailer lights right now, but I may take you up on that.  It seems to run fine hooked up to the hose, but as soon as I put it under load, i better punch it or it will die.  I am extremely tempted to just put a new outboard on the back, but you seem to really like evinrude.  Do you think i should just leave it back there?  You're at LOZ correct?
