Feeling Salty in the Pacific

So headed out last Friday for Cabo with some fam and friends.

I've done Mexico before, but never the Pacific side.   Not sure I'll go back to the gulf side after experiencing Cabo...

It's beautiful out there and I felt allot safer than my previous trips to the gulf.

We chartered a boat for Tuesday and sadly there was a big Marlin tournament going on, but our captain said the Dorado bite was hot and he could put us on the meat.

We went quantity over chasing monsters this trip and it did not disappoint.

We headed north in a rainstorm on a 31footer and my nephew  and BIL Geno and another buddy were all along for the ride.  We trolled skirted plugs they whole way out, and everytime we hit really nasty chop we'd have a rod or two go off.  Mostly smaller mahis, but fun to catch and try not to get flung overboard lol.

My nephew was up and had just got into the fighting chair when he broke off a big one.  I followed but landed a nice 35lb bull.

We did this all morning and had twice where we had 4 rods all hooked up and just running controlled chaos on the boat lol.

My nephew ended up with big fish about 40ishlb bull that the crew said was a Hawaii strain and he changed to a beautiful silver and white in the kill box.  Just a beautiful fish and then soon turned back to green and yellow when he expired.

Wss a great day for sure.  Came back with 14 which was the limit and caught many more. We kept 5 and had them filleted and it was enough fish to feed our party of 19 and feast we did on fish tacos and blackened steaks that our chef made at the resort for us.  Nothing beats fresh fish.

Wow!  That's great!  Fresh Mahi is soooooo good!

The growth rates on these fish is amazing:

"Mahi are the rabbits of the ocean and grow incredibly fast. They may turn out to be the fastest-growing wild fish known to man. In captivity, these fish have been shown to grow 1.3 to 2.7 inches a week, up to four feet and 40 pounds in a year. In the wild, at five months, they can reach 5-6 pounds and are mature."

Where did you stay?

There's Roosterfish around there.  I only caught a small one, they are an interesting fish.

Thanks guys,

Yeah there were def schools of them all over the place.

We stayed at RIU Palace in Cabo San Lucas.

Nice place,  great food that exceeded my expectations. It was clean and the pools and bars were always hopping, and I do love me some Mexican beer as long as I'm in Mexico...

I believe that I may have caught the smallest mahi on hook and line. It was about 10 inches in length, my first pelagic microfish .

Mahi are a blast on a fly rod.

One day I'll get back down there and give that a try.  Also want tarpon on fly rod...

I'd have loved to get a rooster, but had to settle for non stop mahi this trip lol.  We only did a 5hr Charter as well.  Need to book a pure fishing trip down there, although I'd probably go further south to Patagonia
