Random thought as he steers toward the rocks at speed. I don't even know any cops, I just can't imagine anyone in full control of their faculties  not slowing/stopping when it looked plain that he was going ashore almost from the start of the clip. But, I'm not a boater either and that may be normal.  Maybe it's standard for pros to ditch the navigation rules.

7AM is immaterial, it  might be either the start of the  party or just got home from the party.  "It's five o'clock somewhere".  "just another toke and I'll be fine" Or whatever.

"fishing is his job", is that a job  where they random test urine ?

Mark, I've ridden with a bunch of those over my years as an outdoors writer. It's just stupid how some of them never back off the throttle for any reason, while others drive like they at least have some common sense. Most of them are in the latter category, which definitely includes Mike McClelland, James Watson (yes, he actually drives a boat safely) and other Table Rock-area anglers.

i was a co-angler with sonnie chaffin a long time ago.  he wanted to go up the james flipping, which was ok with me.  we took off from mill creek and quickly ran into the fog.  he was telling me all the time how he knew james river like the back of his hand.  he got lost three times before we got to cape fair with me telling him he was going wrong.  i was right each time.  we got headed upstream from virgin bluff in the fog still, and i kept warning him to stay out to the left further to miss a patch of trees that were out in the lake, and he, amazingly again, informed me he knew where that patch of trees were.  that's right, we went right through the middle of them.  that was enough for me.  i made him get over in the passenger seat in his own boat, and got us safely on up the river.

now, i will be the first to admit that i can get lost in a parking lot, but for whatever reason i seem to be able to navigate in the fog, i don't run in the fog and stay idling along the bank.  sonny didn't seem to have a problem of being on plane in the fog at that time.  maybe he has changed over the years, but i never got in a boat with him again.  so, i made two trips with sonny.  my first and my last.

i just can't emphasize enough that there are too many folks driving boats that are going way faster than their driving capabilities.  plus, all the waterways just plain have way more people using them at the same time.  safety and courtesy go a long way.  some idiot dang near ran over three of us way up the kings a couple three weeks ago.  another one came by me running around 40 mph and was within 25 ft. of me.  that is not safe or courteous.  it is getting ridiculous.  be save in your boating ways.  just as if everyone else's life depended on it, including yours.

Hate to speculate, but I have a feeling in addition to speed, a lot of folks are a bit too glued to their graph screens these days. It's an easy trap.
