If you don't understand their language, how do you know that they are Amish? Might they be Polish, or Armenian? Kurds?

You guys really shouldn't be picking on the Amish. Although you aren't really wrong on the whole taking the resources from the land. We had an Amish family living on our land out in the country and we let them live rent free. It was an arrangement that they were to clean up the property and they had to pay for water, electricity and so forth. The land isn't much suitable for growing crops or cattle. Wooded with hills. We had a logger come in before them so there were downed treetops and such that the logger couldn't sell. I told the Amish they could have all of that they wanted and could sell it if need be. Of course they took that deal and instead of outright selling the wood they traded for it. No big deal to me, I just wanted it gone. After they got all of that they wanted more. In which I mean they didn't want to work too hard for the wood down in the valley, but he got mad at me when he asked if he could start taking down good trees and I said no. I told him we already cut down what we wanted to and were fine. He couldn't understand why I wouldn't let him log the whole 60 acres!

There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

There is a lot to respect about Amish/Mennonite , but the perception is that they don't respect game laws so they play by a different set of rules. IF hunting and fishing regs are based on science then everybody that fishes should play by the same rules.

I think some people underestimate the damage that can be done to a fishery by even a few bad characters.   If people saw what happened around the STL area they would understand.  1 or 2 bad apples can clean out a small stream in one season.  That will take years to recover if ever.

How much electricity does a true Amish family use? 🤣

I have no problems with Amish in general. I became friends with a family of them when I was younger. Jonas Schwartz built buggies down by Seymour, MO. He used to come into a store I worked in and buy automotive paint and supplies for his buggies. Really cool guy and he had this wife that was absolutely one of the best people I have ever met. She brought us baked goods and talked fishing and gave poor old Jonas a lot of hell. Never did know her name. She was simply Mrs. Jonas Schwartz to us.

The Amish around here aren't supposed to own things like powerboats, but they have figured out ways to skirt their rules.   All they need is a non-amish friend to form a "partnership", and they can have whatever they want.

I have no problems with them.....they are always friendly, and they pay CASH.   😊

I have no problem with anyone until they try to mess with me. A stranger throwing a line with a hook on it across my boat is something I took as messing with me.

Heck yeah it is!!!

After quickly skimming through this long thread, I'll throw my two cents in....

The biggest dangers are not Amish or people keeping fish (although that is always very frustrating), the biggest dangers are otters, Asian carp, and spotted bass. I would put gigging behind those three.
