Boga grips splitting their jaws, dropped on the hot boat, tailing gloves, etc. I'd bet a lot of money a lot of those trout released and "swim off strong" don't do so hot. bfishn, tjm and snagged in outlet 3 3 “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold
Johnsfolly Posted June 10, 2022 Posted June 10, 2022 Trout are not the brightest fish species in the water. So I typically only go with bait under catch and keep situations. Even then it's pretty easy to remove gut hooks... when I fillet them 😅. The rest of time when trout fishing it would be some sort of artificial. snagged in outlet 3 1
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 11, 2022 Author Posted June 11, 2022 A lot of folks use sculpins. An old lady told me a long time ago to use a dead one otherwise a live one will just hide under a rock. She had quite a stringer of fish. Norfork Adam circa 1970’s. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
fshndoug Posted June 11, 2022 Posted June 11, 2022 -I think we all know bait fish results in many hooks being in the fishes gullet. The exception might be drifting for catfish with true circle hooks .You might get away with fewer trout being hooked deep if you were drifting bait, don't really know since I don't fish for trout with bait.

tjm Posted June 12, 2022 Posted June 12, 2022 And sticks, stones, indigestible corn used as chum, globs of vegetation (swallowed with bugs or snails?) Studies in the past have shown that leaving several inches (8-12") of line hang out of the mouth aided in the passing of the hooks. It prevents the hook turning and becoming deeper buried in tissue, I believe. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
