bait fishing equals gut hooked fish

I'd say a gut hooked fish with the line clipped has a higher chance of surviving than the ones released by some of the people handling them. Boga grips splitting their jaws, dropped on the hot boat, tailing gloves, etc.

I'd bet a lot of money a lot of those trout released and "swim off strong" don't do so hot.

Trout are not the brightest fish species in the water. So I typically only go with bait under catch and keep situations. Even then it's pretty easy to remove gut hooks... when I fillet them 😅. The rest of time when trout fishing it would be some sort of artificial.

-I think we all know bait fish results in many hooks being in the fishes gullet. The exception might be drifting for catfish with true circle hooks .You might get away with fewer trout being hooked deep if you were drifting bait, don't really know since I don't fish for trout with bait.

Based on the number of trout I've caught in Taneycomo with hooks coming out of their rectums, they seem to somehow pass them with decent success. If the fish swallows the hook, cut the line and refrain from digging it out or pulling on the line and yanking it out with hemostats.

based on the small number of trout that I have I have kept for supper, trout have a short straight gut. They do pass hooks and PowerBait.

And sticks, stones, indigestible corn used as chum, globs of vegetation (swallowed with bugs or snails?)

Studies in the past have shown that leaving several inches (8-12") of line hang out of the mouth aided in the passing of the hooks. It prevents the hook turning and becoming deeper buried in tissue, I believe.
