Kids don't need fishing license. They do need daily tags in Parks and I believe they  need Trout Permit on Taneycomo.

Anyone bringing a family interstate (definition of NR)  to a fishing destination  for vacation already  has $thousands invested in travel and accommodation prior to or whether they fish.  Cost to feed each kid every day at even cheap restaurants must be higher than the the cost of fishing permits for 365 days.   $100 today is nothing, it buys about what $8-12 used to buy.  A little wander around the internet indicates a USA vacation this yea will run about $700-$2000 per person this before they hire the $100/hour + tip trout guide.  I really can't see this new permit keeping anyone from traveling here that really wants to fish Taneycomo. Out of curiosity I looked up costs of NR licensing  in some other trout states;

Alaska $100 (+$100 K.Salmon)
Arkansas $60 + $20 trout = $80
California  $166.89
Colorado  $111.03
Idaho $108 + $10 access = $118
Michigan $76.00
Minnesota $51 + $10 = $61
Montana $100 + $7.50 cons. + $10 AISPP = $117.50
New Mexico $56 + $10 + $4 = $70
New York $50
Oregon $110.50 + $66.00 steelhead = $176.50
Pennsylvania $60.97 + $14.97 = $75.94
Utah $120
Washington $115.85
Wisconsin $50 + $10 = $60
Wyoming $102 * $21.50 cons. = $123.50

Mo. $57 + $40 = $97 doesn't seem out of line by that much.

Well, I'm actually on a multi family vacation right now, as we speak.  In Omaha,  AR.   We will be doing the Branson thing.   Those numbers are quite high vs what our budgets are.  My extended family dont really fish.   I have a yearly NR license and trout tag to AR, I'm a MO resident.    I have MO fish, small game and trout.  I'm not into sports or golf, or many other things.  I dont think most of the circle I hang with can justify those numbers as well.   Just my take.

Thread hijack coming, but @Daryk Campbell Sr mentioned sports, so this is his fault :D

I wanted to get the missus some tickets for us to see the Royals for her birthday. I used to be able to snag the company tickets occasionally, but we dropped them a couple years back. Seats like we had -- lower level, around 3rd base, $152 a piece. No thanks!

We've got a large baseball/softball complex a couple miles away. I told her I'd taker her to a game there :D

Thread hijack hijack coming now. This one's all on me:

An old female friend of mine from high school messaged me and asked if I was going to try to see Paul McCartney when he tours in 2026. I had seen that and got on the list for first pick of tickets in Des Moines, the closest show (First pick, oooh hurry, yeah, right). I got my notification and checked it out. They started at $300ish and went up to $500,000,000,000! I might be wrong on the high end number :D So, she tells me she got hers for $800 for a show in CA. She apparently has more money than she did in high school.

She and I saw Paul McCartney and Wings at Kemper in KC in 1976. She's got her ticket stub. It was $8!

We crossed the country to the east coast several times with kids and fed them from local grocery stores for a lot cheaper than the average vacationer, slept them in tents too, and I wouldn't have bought them NR licenses in any of the states that we visited, by the same token I would not be paying a guide to take me fishing nor staying in a resort.   Average numbers take the lows with the highs, so for every tent traveler there must be a resort traveler paying even more  than the averages indicate. I'm using 70 year old fly rods, would never pay more than $150 for any rod, but I know that people are buying production plastic rods for over $1000 and the bamboo guys are spending $4-5000 for production rods. We all have our spending limits, and that NR tag may deter some, but if they have a resort,  a guide and $150 fly line  in the budget the price shouldn't even get a blink.

I haven't kept a trout outside of the trout parks in years, but I would still buy a trout stamp even as a NR to fish different trout streams. I had no issue with giving a little back to cover the costs to rear and stock trout across the state.

What gets me about this bump in the trout stamp is that NR used to pay the same $12 as residents. To go from $12 to $40 is in my mind too steep a jump. I'm sure that there is an admin cost associated with making more license options available which may have been considered. However, I would love to see a 3-day trout stamp at $12-$15, maybe a 10-day at $25 with the annual being $40.

I may not fish in MO next year and it may just be a moot point. I may reconsider when I do make plans to fish there again.

I am brooding currently about spending $26 for 1-day or $81 for annual NR OK fishing license. I am likely to be out there three or four trips this sum/fall.

Go w/o the license and take your chances. It will probably be OK.

Just out of curiosity......How often do the  guide vessels on Taney get pulled up on, and the passengers licenses get checked ?

Not often, I'd guess. 2020-2023 when I could work fully remote I fished Taney a ton. Only year I ever got checked was in 2022, and it happened twice. They were checking every boat fishing. 2020, 2021, and 2023? Never saw an agent on the water. And in my 20 or so days fishing it last year I never saw one either. And none this year. Surprised, because people are fed up and calling constantly.

I forgot to renew for two years once. Just did today, and I've been fishing a bit. With small game, fishing, trout, and bird permits...it came to $72. That's not bad, it's cheaper than a good dinner out for two.

Yep, licenses are cheap entertainment. We might eat a meal away from our home three or four times a month average. Saves lots of bucks for doing other things.
