Well the only reason for this post is to hopefully  make some people  be aware at how precarious being out in the water on a boat can be. I have been boating and have owned several boats for 25 years and jump around the rails from front to back all the time but, it can be dangerous.

I went fishing for a few with Hog Wally and his awesome friend Matt who is now a great friend of mine on Saturday. Everything  was going great the fish were just starting  to get going as we were just floating downstream  between ripples. Now I was wearing  flip flops, which in hindsight may not be the best choice for a boat shoe but, I caught my toe portion of the flip flop on Hog Wally's net as I was on the back deck. When I tried to get my other foot down to not trip I stepped  too far forward and came down on open space where his back bench seat is and drops down approximately 12 inches or so which really thru me off and I fell forward with my rod in my hand quite hard striking  his pleXi glass wind shield across my nose and face, shattering his wind shield in the process. I broke or ruptured the cartilage in my nose and made a .69 inch deep incision across my nose and darn near cut it off. I was seeing stars for about 5 seconds  and wasn't  sure what had really happened at first other than the copious amount of blood pouring  out of my face.

Hog Wally  immediately fired up the boat and said we need to go to the hospital  fast and his and his friend's reactions startled me as I just thought  I had crunched my nose and it was bleeding. We went to the Sullivan BJC hospital  and they wanted nothing to do with it and wanted  to put me on an abundance for Mercy hospital in St.Louis. My wife is a NP and was on the way to Sullivan....we made the choice of My new blood brother Hog Wally :) driving  my truck and me back to my house to let my wife look at it. She has many doc friends and another family member who is an ENT doc  and a surgeon. After we called him he told us to come by his office for a quick meeting and instead of waiting in another ER for hours  more than likely, he would zip me back up. Fred took care of what Sullivan  ER wanted no part of in 47 minutes. I ended up with 54 stiches with 24 being internal as sliced  my left nostril almost off as well but, he did good and I in some pain but, just remember activities on a boat floating on water can be dangerous especially if you are a dork like me.....be careful out there guys and gals.

Holy crap dude, I'm glad your ok. Your right, those of us who spend a lot of time in boats tend to get lackadaisical. We all need to be careful all the time.

Datum man that is quite a wound.  I have always said flip flops are the product of evil, I know seveal folks who have ended up in casts because of them.  However you are the only one I know of who got stitches, and 54 of them even.  The finished product sort of gives you an old time mobster look. :o

Eww Bummer !    :o

Yep, I'm on my wife and kids all the time about those #@&k1n flip-flops.

A nail head sticking up 1/8" caused my flip-flop wearing oldest daughter to bust her face wide open.  And my wife and youngest kid trip and fall all the time.....yet they just LOVE their stupid azz flip flops.

Everytime one of them takes off running across the yard or driveway I cringe. But they won't listen.

Wow that really stinks.   Glad it wasn't the throat.   Get well soon.
