Quillback Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 My favorite are summer run steelhead, when I fished for them in Washington state. Very hard fighters, very acrobatic and a challenging fish to catch which makes it very rewarding when you do catch one. At one time my plan was to retire up there and be a full time steelhead bum, but the runs have declined to the point where I doubt I'll ever go back to fish for them. I'll just have to be satisfied with some great memories. So for now, my favorite are smallmouth bass, I love catching a 3lb. smallie on top water, or on light tackle like the ned rig. kjackson, Daryk Campbell Sr and Johnsfolly 3

They are hunted down individually, then you have to entice them as you would another fish. I know that isn't one species, but the question is too hard to narrow down. There are so many that I haven't caught yet. Johnsfolly and Quillback 2 Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. Johnsfolly Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Honestly there are so many different fish and each have their positive attributes. If it boiled down to a couple (I know I just can't pick one ). I have a preference more often than not to gravitate to more predatory fish. For streams and clear rivers I will always go for smallmouth bass and brown trout. They both fight hard and can be found in some of the nicest places to fish. For sheer enjoyment of abundance and also their spunky fighting you can't beat bull bluegills during the spawn. For saltwater, if we are talking about bucket list fish then possibly roosterfish or big yellowfin tuna. As Daryk pointed out micros are always a passion and they are in every creek or river or pond and you have to like that! Quillback and Daryk Campbell Sr 2
BilletHead Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Good question Ryan, Like others in their response to your request whatever I am catching at the time I am fishing. I do have an affinity for pursuing cutthroat trout in their native ranges. I sometimes catch grief from some on here because of the way I feel about natives. The wife and I have been blessed with getting to try for two weeks the past few summers. It is the quest, the hunt, doing it on our own and finally the catching. Just started with the four natives in Wyoming. This snowballed to two native cuts in Montana plus grayling, redband rainbow and the bonus bull trout. The four cuts of Utah, then the three in Colorado. Bonus Gila in New Mexico and Apache in Arizona. Have two to three more native cutts we would like to do before we cannot do it anymore. I applaud the removal of non natives and restoration of native fish in their ranges. Man can screw up so much but he can sometimes repair what he has done. Do I like to catch stocked trout? Yes but there is NOTHING to compare catching trout where they belong. Saltwater I have only caught redfish, sea trout and one lone flounder. The redfish would be my favorite now but hope to catch other species someday and pick a new favorite. Blazerman Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 in the past i would instantly say smallmouth in an Ozark stream. But after catching some nice hybrids this year i was amazed at how hard they hit and fight. Makes me want to catch a bunch more. Quillback, snagged in outlet 3, Seth and 5 others 8
