Archdale - please let us know what version you end up with and in the end how it works.  Regarding you friend, it sounds like the GPS in the troller has issues - I think you can use the gps in the Garmin fish locator - not sure how - I believe my setup uses the GPS in the chartplotter but if I turn the chartplotter off it uses the GPS in the troller - I think this only because if I do turn off the chartplotter and the troller uses the gps in the troller the boat does not do the 10 ft backup thing on the initial spot lock.

I've had 4-5 Minnkota trolling motors brought in because of spot lock issues.  And in every case it was either a jighead, jigging spoon, or a pair of needle nose pliers thrown down on the deck within 6" of the GPS puck.

That'll screw them up Everytime.  😅

If you think I won't charge 120.00 to move a pair of pliers.......just try me.  😁

If you have a Garmin graph tied to the troller, look to see what the graph says regarding the troller version - my last issue occurred trying to go to 4.06 which "bricked" the troller.  One of the techs I trusted told me not to upgrade when I got the new troller (#3 for me) which I have not done - sound like there has been another version since then.

I didn't have a pair of pliers within six inches of the Ultrex GPS puck but I DID have a pair of pliers in the recessed foot control tray that got wedged under the pedal.

For some weird crazy reason the spot lock didn't like that AT ALL.

While I was very proud of myself for being able to troubleshoot and correct this most challenging problem all by myself  I had no idea that I had saved $120!

Think I'll treat myself to something nice today with that extra dinero!

Heck, now that I think about if I had taken it to Blue Springs Marine it probably would have cost at least a grand so now I'm really gonna do something nice for myself!

@fishinwrenchJust because I am a bit slow, are you speaking of the Humminbird GPS puck or the Minnkota Heading Sensor puck.  My spot lock is not as good as it should be, probably needs recalibrated.  but it sits pretty close to my TM mount Thanks

Any of them, really.   You have to use a compass to select it's mounting location, to ensure no interference from metal stuff nearby.

And be sure to use stainless screws to mount it.
