Dutch Posted March 12, 2022 Author Posted March 12, 2022 I decided to make up a few and give them a try as it gets closer to the spawn. Johnsfolly, Nick Adams, nomolites and 5 others 7 1
dblades Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 Used them all the time when I first retired back here in the 90's. Usually fished them in a light rocker head, single wire hook weed guard. Either slowly dragging or very small hops. Some days it seemed to catch them better than a jig or tube. Don't know why the fell out of my rotation, I've still got a lot in storage. I'm sure they will get you bit. Looks like you got good colors there. dtrs5kprs 1
dtrs5kprs Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 Pre little brown jig, Shakey head, and Ned they were staples. Our entire club threw them, especially on bluffs up the rivers, and especially in cold water. We also used to put them straight down into deep trees, when we had trees. Was just a killer in the fall. 1/8 to 3/8 wire guard heads like the Chompers heads, or football heads. Nick Adams, Quillback and snagged in outlet 3 3
moguy1973 Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 I've had good luck on a swing head jig with them in the past. Dragging them back up the current in a river, smallies seemed to like them. snagged in outlet 3 1 -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Seth Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 I have a pile of these in a ziploc bag laying in the shed. For whatever reason, I just quit using them a few years ago. Cinnamon purple jelly was always my favorite color. It seemed to work in dingy and clear water. Maybe I'll dig them out and give them another try this year. grizwilson 1

Quillback Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 I hate it when you guys talk up a lure. Never have fished a hula grub, now I have some on order... snagged in outlet 3, Daryk Campbell Sr and grizwilson 1 2

He absolutely tore them up on a garlic Chomper. He paralleled the bank for 2 days. I caught a few but he never allowed me to cast ahead of the boat even while he messed with his lure or ate a snack. I take guys fishing all the time and would never do that. I go out of my way to give them an angle and fresh water to fish. dtrs5kprs, Daryk Campbell Sr and grizwilson 3
DADAKOTA Posted March 14, 2022 Posted March 14, 2022 I enjoy other folks catching fish. I've backed the boat up so they can get a better angle. I would not fish with him again. A knock upside the head with a 1 ounce Carolina sinker might do him good. Otherwise I'd have had him take m back to my vehicle. nomolites, dtrs5kprs, snagged in outlet 3 and 2 others 4 1
