Members Wesley Posted May 17, 2023 Members Posted May 17, 2023 Need advice. I have tried crawdad traps but I never get any dads. I am going to put dead fish in the traps this time. Any tip on where to put traps. Depth?
fishinwrench Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 The very backends of narrow wooded (shaded) coves, preferably ones that are situated so that the mouth of the cove faces South. As far as depth...... I'd start by placing them at the depth where you can just barely (but not quite) see the bottom. Bait with a double-fistful of dead crappie minnows, and/or some pieces of ham or rib bones. Disclaimer: I have absolutely ZERO experience trapping crawdads.....but one of my closest friends is a fisheries biologist, and I bet I could do better than him at it 😅 cheesemaster, Ik314 and dan hufferd 1 2
Maverickpro201 Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 I always used chicken livers, tied them up so they hung in the middle of the trap. set at about 2 feet deep, in the backs of coves. Have not done it in years and always in rivers also.
Bassin4fun Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 There are several videos on YouTube about this very topic...Crawdads on Table Rock. They were using hotdogs. Some of the other videos and comments to them go into detail about where to place traps.
Members dougdean Posted May 17, 2023 Members Posted May 17, 2023 one dollar can of dog food. works great. Big Keene, bfishn, Seth and 1 other 4
bobby b. Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 I use the cheapest can dog food I can buy, poking lots of holes in it with an ice pick. I put the trap in my slip which is 18 fow. I can fill a large trap in 2 hours with huge dads. For reasons I cannot explain the smaller traps sold at Walmart.do not work. I bought a large trap years ago locally. Big Keene Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 15-25 ft deep in the dock slips is what we do. go catch a bunch of bluegill, clean em and stuff your traps full of the carcasses. we have had good luck with both the round minnow style traps, and the little square ones from walmart. dan hufferd Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 You have to try real hard to trap creek chub, as long as you have this hope in your heart when you set your traps, all you will get is crawdads RangerR83, cheesemaster, Royal Blue and 1 other 2 2
