Breaking the ice…literally

Dutch

Recommended Posts

Jeff met me this morning at 07:45 at the Cape Fair ramp.  It was 31° and foggy.  The water in the cove was 35°.  It was 39-41 on the main lake.  The water is dingy to dirty.  Below Wolly Creek before you get to Carney Branch the lake was covered with ice.  I didn’t see any sign of any other boat having gone through so we made a path.

We fished several different ways, the places that produced and had a 4 1/2 hour skunk.  Going for broke we hit something totally different and it worked.  In the last hour and a half we caught smb, lmb and spots.  All came on Ned in 27-53’.  We wound up with 35 at least 20 of which were keepers.  The fish of the day was a 3 1/3# spot.  We had several others very close to it.  This is the best January day that I can remember.

A Ned is totally different? I thought that’s all Jeff ever threw.

Dutch meant that we fished a different type of structure.  I did catch them on a Ned.  Caught 29 bass all on the same rig, a half Zinker glued to one of Dtrs Ozark Finesse heads.  If I had a personal great baits Hall of Fame, I'd put that one in there, but since I don't, I'll be throwing it next time out.

I did try a little tube for a while and a Keitech, but threw those in the skunk areas.
