If you can find them....Browning Airstream.....Guys on here highly recommended them. I bought 1 for crappie fishing and then couldn't find them when I wanted another. Finally they showed back up and I now have 5 of them. Use them for crappie, trout, and gills.

    Hey Devan,

Thanks for the tip on the airstream..i ended up trying the lightning rod trout - returned it, a pflueger trion - sold it, and then eventually went with an Airstream which is actually made by bass pro shops now, they must have bought out that design from Browning cuz it's the same stick. I got the 6'-6" UL and I love it. Paired it with a size 25 pflueger reel and 2 pound line and I love the feel it has. I'll probably buy another 6'-6" when i see one again.

  2. Floated the James for the first time today and had a great day. As for the fishing, I did manage to squeak out 2 smallies, one little guy on a maribou jig and a 14" that deserves a story...

We were about 2/3 done with our float and headed thru a fast riffle and I saw a perfect little eddy pocket right next to fast water...threw my little white 360 GT swimbait in and moved a nice smallie to the kayak but he darted back into the pocket. I whipped another cast almost over my shoulder to the same spot and got smacked instantly. As soon as i hooked up i realized i was about to drift into the branches of a huge downed tree at the end of this riffle...

I quickly reeled up and boat flipped the smallie into my lap and tried to set my rod down next to me..that only half worked as my baitcaster slowly slid back into the river while i tried to paddle backward to miss the tree...after a super awkward struggle for about 15 seconds in front of a nice family sitting on the gravel bar, my kayak came to rest on some braches and I sat perfectly still 90 degrees to the fast current...i unhooked the fish and didnt want to take the time for a picture so took a quick meaurement and sent him on his way...after that i simply paddled off the branches like my life didn't just flash before my eyes...

    Tight lines guys!

  3. Overall a fairly slow trip tonight but a cool memory was created for someone else so Ill mark it as a win. Managed 4 fish between me and two guests...but one was a 18" rainbow that nailed my boss's jerkbait, put on an arial show, peeled some drag before making its way to the net.

Caught one other small rainbow, a small brown (first in a long time), and a chubby Kentucky

A cool night with lots of fog rolling off the lake and Im off to float the James in the morning.

Big Rainbow - silver shadow rap

Small rainbow - sculpin peach jig 1/8oz

Brown trout - Berkley Cutter Jerkbait 110+ in a black and chartreuse

Kentucky - Rattling rogue in a table rock shad pattern

Had a nice trip in the Kerr area a couple of days ago.  The water level is getting really nice for floating and fishing. I caught a variety of fish including small mouth, rock bass, and a white bass. I had approximately 24 fish total. The majority of the fish were small; however,  I had 3 - 4 fish that were between 12 - 14 inches.

I used 1/16th size ned rigs paired with 2.5 inch robo worms In Aaron's magic and morning dawn colors. I also used a 1/8 size ned rig using a 3" watermelon colored grub.  The majority of the bites on the grub occurred as the bait was gliding back to the bottom.  Most of the ned rig fish were caught in current seams and eddies while letting the current provide most of the action on the jigs.

I also caught several fish on a craw patterned wiggle wart crankbait in the areas of faster moving water with structure nearby.  I had a few blowups at daylight with the whopper popper, but none of the fish truly committed.

Please practice catch and release and happy fishing!!IMG_20200620_184412_258.jpg20200620_153758.jpg

Thanks for the report! I'm doing my first float trip on the James on Wednesday with my wife for our birthdays...im stocked up on craw and green pumpkin ned gear as well as some craw cranks, should be a good day.

  5. Hey @Bill Babler ive been coming down every Tuesday evening for the past 7 weeks so not as much as you guys guiding multiple days a week but I plan on putting together an overall report with my comments and findings...im looking forward to it, ive never had a chance to fish weekly until recent events....Id say I had 1 absolutely amazing day, 2-3 really good, 2-3 ok, and one awful....sometimes its just tough no matter what you try.

  6. My trip started off with my first ever stop at Lilley's Landing for some Maribou jigs. Really not sure why I hadn't been in there sooner. I wanted to try some new color combinations and whoever the guy was that was working in the fly shop was super friendly and professional and I love the setup they've got. Grabbed a dozen jigs and off i headed to the dam.

First color was a sculpin and orange with an orange head. Had a nice fish on my 3rd or 4th cast but he shook off after a pretty weak hookset on my part.

Next I switched to the black and purple, about a dozen casts in and I hooked a beast. It was a big rainbow and after launching himself clear out of the water within the first 15 seconds of the fight, he spit the jig back at me...darn..

A little while later I switched over to a new jig I just started tying which is essentially a black bunny leach with a pinch of chartreuse bucktail on the belly..that brought the first rainbow to hand, an absolute beauty about 18"..

    20200623_191545.jpg

Then it got dark and I noticed a gentleman up at the cable had landed two nice walleye on what looked like a jerkbait so i thought I'd switch over and swing for the fences...I tied on a purple shad colored Spro McStick that @Ryan Miloshewski had just gifted  me a few weeks back (what a nice guy). On the 2nd cast I closed the bail, made my first two jerks and the rod got heavy...some big headshakes on the way in and I thought I had a big walleye for sure. Clicked on my head lamp and found a porker of a rainbow skating in.. my first official 20+" trout on Taney @ 20-1/8"...and with a gut to match..he splashed off to fight another day

I'm not sure what it is about Taneycomo that draws me back there over and over again. I'm not from Missouri so I don't have any deep childhood ties or long history with it but it just feels like God meant to move me to Missouri just so I could fish this little stretch of water. I have such great memories just in the past 4 years of fishing mornings, evenings, winters, summers catching multiple different species not to mention all the folks I've met there that have helped me improve as an angler. It's truly a special place. Not many places like it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this short novel 😊

  7. Started fishing around 6 with no luck, threw jigs in brown and olive, stripped woolies and clousers, tried a jerkbait..nothin...when it got dark i dug to the bottom of the tacklebox and found a baby ratl trap that i normally throw for white bass up on the little sac..first cast and after 3 cranks got crushed by a chubby 19" rainbow...proceeded to give me heck after getting in the net. Broke a set of trebles and flipped out of the net right as i took the picture...but still kicked off all ticked off at me.

About 5 casts later a small walleye smashed me with about 6 feet of line out so that was a nice little scare..

An otherwise unsuccessful trip was turned around in the last 20 minutes.

I think I could get into the night fishing thing on Taneycomo.

Every drive back to Springfield I just keep thinking how blessed I am to have such an awesome fishery close by as well as the opportunity to enjoy it. God has been very good to me.20200616_205928.jpg

  8. I have read enough on this forum to know that there are oodles of good floats for smallies. My wife just surprised me by asking if we could do a float for our Birthdays the week of July 4th.

What would be the best combo for scenery and a chance at decent numbers of fish within a couple hours of Springfield?

I have a bunch of fly gear and spinning gear but i could also use tips on baits to try and how to fish them. I almost exclusively jig fish in rivers with maribou and bucktail stuff that i tie.

We would likely try to go on a weekday to avoid the crowds as best as possible. We dont have our own kayaks or canoes so we'd be renting.

  9. Had a couple of hours to kill with the wife and kids headed to Branson..decided to run 15 minutes over to the James by RiverCut golf course.

No fish but saw a lotta life, watched two smaller largemouth bust a group of shad right by my feet, saw a couple of banded sculpin about an inch long, some huge gar surfacing, a few snakes dont know what kind..then on my way back to the car spotted a couple of really nice largemouth swimming back up in a small creek. Ran my skitter pop right over them with no luck.

Also had a father decide to teach his daughter swimming lessons right in the eddy i was fishing..oh well thats what you get closer to town i guess.

Gonna try tomorrow on Taneycomo and hope my luck changes. The last couple trips have been pretty uneventful for me. But i think some of my new bunny sculpin jigs will change the outcome 😊

  10. Hey guys,

Today, after about 25 years...i finally broke my first rod tip..unfortunately it was about 8" from the tip on my 6wt fly rod.

Its a white river hobbs creek 8'-6" 6wt that is the 4 piece version.

What is my best option? Are there rod repair kits that would work?

Can i order just the 4th segment of the same rod as a spare part?

Is there a repair shop that ya'll would recommend?

Or with fly rods, once its broke, am i better off just buying a new rod?

    Thanks!

  11. Looking for recommendations for decent bank fishing access. I have been pounding Taneycomo for the past month and a half and I'm looking to try something new. I'd like to target some smallmouth or goggle eye with the flyrod and ultralights.

I have a good pair of chest waders but no boat.

Also, i havent fished the James much, what are thes best baits to throw this time of year? Im guessing craw cranks, jigs, maybe a ned? I have some spinnerbaits and topwaters as well..

Thanks in advance! Feel free to PM me or share on the forum.

    God bless!

  12. Pretty tough day...managed one white bass to hand...missed several rainbow swipes at the brown zonker jig and a couple more on a tiny rattle trap...made some neat low water discoveries including one of the jigs I lost last week, a crawdad the size of a baseball, and some sculpin.

Still a great evening to be out in God's creation!

  13. Just wanted to state what a lot of you already know, but this forum community is full of great folks. I have learned some super tips and met some very generous people and yesterday was no exception. Met up with Ryan Miloshewski and had a great time. Exchanged strategies and a few baits. Ryan was even talking with a few strangers at the fly shop and offered to take them out for some night fishing. It impresses me how many folks are willing to share tips and even give away flies and lures so that someone else has a chance at success.

I did manage one nice rainbow on a brown 1/8oz. PJ's maribou jig and missed another but it was pretty tough to find slow enough water to make a decent drift from the bank. Im inspired to start tying some other sculpin creations from bucktail and zonker strips now.

A big thanks to @Ryan Miloshewski, we'll fish again soon!

It was tough yesterday one of the guides that was out,  called and told me it was his worst day ever on Taney.  Phil and I were out a couple of hours and only caught a few.

That actually makes me feel a little better 😊 still such a pretty night to be out. I was surprised I nearly had the place to myself but that's why I fish Tuesdays

  15. The last two Tuesdays were super productive so I guess the law of averages balanced things out today..

I threw jerkbaits, jigs, then headed to the outlets and tried scuds and midges...not a single bite...

I dont think i have the high flow tactics figured out quite yet...i tried some heavier 1/4oz.  jigs but I wasn't keeping consistent bottom contact.

I did have one pretty cool encounter with about an 18" rainbow. Flipped my midge and float setup upstream to float it down to him..when it got to him he slowly rose and sipped in my pink float...makes me want to start tying some dries..

As far as my new equipment reviews. I LOVE my new pflueger trion combo. I got the 6' medium light with the 30 size reel and its my new favorite trout rod. Super light weight and the reel is super smooth.

As for my other purchase, the size 25 Pflueger President reel, I was not overly impressed. It seems like its needs a lube job right out of the box...it ran fairly smooth but it's like i can feel the gear teeth meshing and it makes a very light grinding noise..anyone have a similar experience?

I keep getting calls from friends wanting to know if I need help evacuating...

I told them I don't think it's that bad.  Actually, I'm not sure if it's bad at all.

This "event" is so different than the other "floods" we've had.  And this isn't a flood, not yet.  Not even close.  Flash floods, yes.  We've had 2 in 2 days locally - north of town.  Almost the exact some spot.  Crazy.

But most of this rain has fallen, again, east of Table Rock although some fell around Beaver and some in Table Rock.  But more local rain and not widespread.  I've been looking at the Kings, James, the White above Beaver and none are rising that much.

I just don't see anything changing at Beaver or Table Rock.  But the Corps may surprise us all.

If they run, they don't have to spill over the top at Table Rock.  They can run 15,000 through the turbines and that could be enough to keep up with the inflow.  Beaver may move some water... but I don't see it rising.

But there's plenty of rain in the forecast... one of the storms will put someone over - either Beaver or Table Rock.  Then they will release.

Flood gates, fishing wise, would be much better than 4 full units.  It would bring shad in and warmer water.  Trout will go nuts.  But there will be heavy flows - no dock fishing or very little fishing off the banks.  The flow won't be dangerous... I would consider anything over 25,000 cfs too high to send our rental boats out.  I would go though.  Over 30k - hummm may be not.  But I'm not going to say for sure.

Unless the rain just stops, we're going to see something soon.  Full generation and/or spill gates.  There's just too much water in the system.  But flooding... where our guests would be asked to leave... I don't see that at all.  The storms are moving through too fast.

Thanks for the insight Phil, im headed down to bank fish tomorrow evening and hoping for similar results to my past two outings. The fishing on Taneycomo has been outstanding!
