I have been checking this site daily for a couple of years. I love reading the information that you fine people provide for all who come here. I graduated from the University of Kansas and my father went to Kansas State.....I wanted my own path. I truly feel for the University of Missouri. This whole situation would do the same to nearly every university in our wonderful country if it happened in their neck of the woods. The answer to these problems is love! Love each other and treat each other well. Our world would be much better place if more people thought that way. By the way, thank you guys/women for helping other fisherman with your helpful information. That's the thing. Not defending MU or any other University, but you are right, just about any campus is one or two small social media posts or media stories away from something like this breaking out. grizwilson and Flysmallie 2 "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." SpoonDog Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 Lol, "deranged student protestors?" MU mistook a tuition bump in the 2000s as a trend, and couldn't have anticipated a recession that'd make people on the bubble about college less likely to go. They didn't anticipate the effect the internet would have on learning: butts-in-the-seats attendance may be down, but there's 30,000 folks, from teens to geriatrics, taking classes online. Why spring for a dorm when all you need's a laptop and an internet connection? It's lazy to say that Mizzou's enrollment is down because the football team sucks or because some folks camped out on the lawn three years ago when college enrollment across the country has been declining since 2010. And like Flysmallie mentioned, I don't think MU anticipated Missouri State. Springfield's the third largest population center and one of (the?) fastest growing part of the state. You can pay more for room and board plus tuition at a university four hours away, or they can their undergrad done in town- they probably even have arrangements with local high schools for college credit. It's a no brainer. And because MO State is less research-focused than MU, professors aren't scrambling to write grants and write papers and otherwise defend their existence. I'm a Mizzou alum, and if the university had demonstrated as much interest in improving classrooms and recruiting top teachers as it did investing in new research facilities, new rec centers, new commons, and new stadiums, I'd be all for my kids going there. But they didn't, and eventually prospective students and their parents caught on. They could turn it around, but it'd require acknowledging administrative mistakes have been made instead of scapegoating. As of now, that doesn't seem likely. abkeenan 1

vernon Posted August 23, 2017 Posted August 23, 2017 I've often wondered how much the fact that MU's journalism school has such a rich and highly respected history might have influenced the liberal trend in attitude on campus that enabled such behavior to become not only acceptable but, to a degree, encouraged. Now I completely understand that MOST universities and college campuses lean liberal but not all went off the cliff to the degree that MU did during their recent moments of infamy. Not that it's relevant (but then again it may very well be) but I saw last night that only 4% of sports journalists voted for or support President Trump. Now I'm a big Trump guy but I'm not sure how anybody can logically justify a number that disproportionate unless journalism in general is way out of whack. In fact, it's SO out of whack that ESPN just pulled one of their sportscasters from an upcoming broadcast of a University of Virginia football game. Why? Because his name is Robert Lee and they're afraid his name might spark controversy or violence. And, oh by the way, Mr. Lee is Asian so there's that......... Maybe he needs to start referring to himself as "Bobby" Lee before he's banned from sports journalism and broadcasting altogether. tho1mas, Browning Guy and abkeenan 3 "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."
