Well another turkey season is upon us. Kind of sparse round these parts this year. I have been watching two toms and a few hens using a tree row. One side is a wheat field and the other a disked field. Both were corn last year. The birds had been pitching into the wheat but changed as the wheat got deeper. So up early and stumbled in the dark to another tree row East of the main roosting row. Set out my scoot and shoot decoy. Easy to see for the birds landing in the field.  As the sky started to lighten up the bird sounded off well on the roost. Then down to the field he came. I called a bit and he perked up. A hen came down next. Here we go I thought he has his girls and will stay with them, NOPE. Called a few more times and he spotted the decoy. Set a course for it and me. Closed the distance of 150 yards pretty quick stopping three times to gobble. Bang your dead. Hot dog! Got my prize and set it across the fence behind me and almost squashed a morel. OK I can deal with this photo op. thumbnail_0419210635a - Copy.jpg

thumbnail_0419210636 - Copy.jpg I carried the bird half way to the truck, went back and repeated with decoy and gear. Repeat again to moms yard. Well lookie here. thumbnail_0419210641 - Copy.jpg   Looked around more and found others. Have not counted but close to 20 I am guessing.  Cleaned and taken care of and just to poke fun at @fishinwrench and @Terrierman I want them to know the legs, thighs, wings and oysters from the back are going to good use :) Remember waste not want not?

It was 20lbs. 15 oz. Inch spurs and 10 inch beard.

Good job, bud!   👍

We have been seeing and hearing alot of turkeys around here for the last week or so.   They are really on the move.   Even saw one dead on the highway yesterday, which is rare.

I love hunting turkeys but can't justify killing one because "I don't know how to cook them right".

Don't know if I should laugh or like. Remember goose was bad stuff until you tried flying fajatas. :). Guess you are going to have to travel out of your comfort zone (food and travel) and come down and get you a meal.

Harvesting a gobbler and finding morels to boot is hard to beat! I had one start hammering at 6:20 after it had hit the ground. Thought he was crossing the field, but I was wrong and he stayed in the timber and headed west. Would have been a lot easier if he had given away his position on the roost. I guess I need to start going out in the evenings and try to roost them if they are going to be like this. Dad and my brother each got toms this morning. I'm slacking!

If I ever eat thunder chicken again it will either be because YOU prepared it, or because I'm homeless, penniless, and can't find anything else to eat.
