The issue that I see with fast food joints is there really are only three levels of employees. The cooks, counter, stock folks are really all the same. Then Asst manager and then manager. So how do you structure the lower levels so that you can get a separation in duties based upon skill and seniority? That would to me be the only way that you could prevent vastly overpaying teens in their first job versus the working mom that may not be able to dedicate the time away from kids to be a manager. You can't get to a living wage simply by merit increases alone.

Without fixing that system and by forcing minimum wage hikes to me the repercussions are two fold. More automation replacing staff and or price increases such that the buying power of that new wage is rapidly diminished.

Why does fast food work need to earn a living wage? How do we determine what part time occupations should be a living wage? Who determined minimum wage was to live on? How much drive does it take to out earn minimum wage (very little)….

how many felonies should a person be allowed to work a higher paying full time job? Is there a list of illegal drugs we should standardize and determine they don’t impair the user or their use doesn’t risk their co-workers?

felonies and drugs hinder waaay to many “workers”…. If only they were avoidable 🙄

Here's what people (customers) are fed up with:.  Seeing/hearing commercials from these fast food joints.....and then when they decide to go, it's all disgusting and a ripoff.   So whatever that advertising campaign is costing them....it is a total waste of money.

Make some truly GOOD FOOD and not only will people come back often, the word will get out, your customers will do your advertising for you (pro bono), and kids will be proud to work there......instead of being ashamed to work there.

Hell no, McDonald's and Sonic can't keep help. No surprise there!  Who would WANT to be a part of that?

It isn't that kids are "too lazy to work", it is that kids want and deserve to be proud of where they work.   Do something to make them proud to be there !

You hit the nail right on the head wrench... I found that if you have a clean good organized workplace for people they tend to stick around I have a boys out of work for me for for 5 years something to work for me longer than that and the key is consistency. We have had excellent growth for the last eight years as a result of that and you're right kids do want to work somewhere where people aren't going to make fun of them because it sucks

I felt the same way for a long time in arguing against raising the minimum wage. Presenting the argument that minimum wage was not a goal.. Also that those positions are for teens that are not living on their wages just yet. This year I have been more aware of the staff working in the fast food places in our area. The majority of them, MCDs, Hardee's, Arby's, Popeyes. KFC, Burger King, etc. are staffed (>80%) by black and Hispanic women between the ages of 25 to 40 yrs old. Chick-Fil A is staffed by more teens. Cashiers at our local grocery stores are nearly all older women as well. Those observations started me thinking about what could be done. Those women are likely to have a high school education and probably have kids.

Everytime I go anywhere to do anything I am reminded of the biggest problem in society....

Too many people.

There is a gross imbalance.

It's screwing up everything.

I’ve heard this before.   So how many have you added to the problem.  Are you getting them fixed so they don’t make it worse?

I've definitely added my two.  But yes I fixed both of them.  They agree with me 100%, so I don't think I'll ever be a grandpa.    Maternity is not among their goals in life whatsoever.  👍

You know I was joking...  But thanks anyway😁

Bingo.  I never see a teenager working MOST service jobs.  Maybe some in fast food joints, but the vast majority behind the counter at the quick shop or the grocery store, the restaurant workers, hotel workers, and just about any other service job are adults, often women.  Here's the unpalatable truth...we have become a service economy.  Without service jobs paying minimum wage or just a bit better, there wouldn't be anywhere close to enough jobs to employ all the adults that need and want work.  And the service jobs keep shrinking with self-checkout and other forms of automation.

So unfortunately, service jobs ARE going to have to be "careers" for many.  It's one reason why the disparity between the rich and poor keeps getting bigger.  The person who once was able to get a factory job paying a decent wage and benefits (thanks mainly to unions) is now having to take a job that pays minimum wage because the factory jobs ain't there anymore and they ain't coming back.

Yep, and the one person who was trying to pull the reins on that, and escalate the America First movement.....is the one you hated with a passion and wanted as far away from Capital Hill as you could put him.

Oh well. 🤷

It all makes absolutely no sense if no one is working, where people are getting money to spend in casinos.

they are getting their money from the same place that people are getting their money for used boats, trucks and RV's and fishing 7 days a week.  They just spend it at the casino's.   Just keep paying your taxes so they will be happy.

Around here I really don’t see the working mothers in fast food. I see pretty much all teenagers. I also see the drive thru lines getting longer and longer. When I pull up to the front of the line after a long wait, many times I see a group of teens texting each other and not getting anything done. And no, fast food restaurants were never meant to be a living wage.
