Battery powered LED's are light, cheap, and easy to mount or stick on just about anything. You would think that could light up a kayak for $100 plus the price of a small re-chargeable 12Vbattery.

is such lighting required, or are you just suggesting that it's possible? Would such an led help at all in day light or when waves obscure the kayak?

Did they ever say why this man drowned? collision, fell off the board, wind/wave action?

Having lived on Lake O for over 30 years I can tell you that there are 2 kinds of visability problems to overcome....

There is..." I didn't see it" because the object was somehow camouflaged.

And there is....."I didn't see it" because I wasn't looking/or paying attention.

I swear to God, you could put a giant bouy, the size of a houseboat, in the middle of the lake, paint it bright yellow and flourecent orange with 1000 flashing lights.......And within 7 days at least 3 people will hit it.

If you think I'm lying or exaggerating, just look closely at all of the scars on the Grand Glaize Bridge pilings. Then consider that THAT is an Idle Only zone.

Its the wide open lake.  Not looking for chunks or disturbances like the river runners in Jets do.

Lots of 50+ mph (some much faster than that) rigs on the rivers these days. My 40mph 150hp setup is low man on the totem pole. They aren't running those anywhere but the long straight stretches though.

Amazing, I don't see how you or they avoid the  barely submerged trees and boulders, brand new bars etc. I'd have thought most rivers have a new set of hazards after every rain, but, I have no experience on bigger rivers. If wading puts me in the path of a 50+mph boat I guess I don't want to.

I've got a couple of blinking lights on my bike that are > 180 degree visible.  They're small, came with a rubber strap to fasten to handle bars and back rack.  Weight is practically nothing.  Would be easy to fasten one to the top of a kayak flagpole and would greatly increase visibility to others.  Most bike riders around here use something similar, both front and rear.  Kayakers should take a lesson.
